i have a 70 superbee, 440 and 727

i am looking to upgrade to a 518 so i have an overdrive for hwy...

does anyone know the significance of the difference between the 46RH and 46RE

i know 1 is hydraulic and one is electrical.... is one built better for a 400-500hp car?

thanks in advance

IIRC, you need the computer to make the RE shift and you don't for the RH.....just need a switch to make the OD and lockup work and remember to switch it off when you come to a stop or it'll kill the engine. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

I know nothing about either of these trannys, but a good thread! If the OD needs to be switched off at a stop, then a relay, wired to the brake light switch, would do the job to disconnect the OD.

find a RH.. you can then setup up relay based pressure switches to turn on the OD and the lock up.

here is everything you will need and need to know:

46RE uses an electronic govener and the 46RH is hydraulic like the have been for years. The 46RE uses a speed sensor to tell the PCM the output shaft speed so it can adjust gov pressure and like was said the RE needs the PCM (computer) to work. Ron

Is there an adapter for these transmissions to mate them to a big block? Didn't both of these come out after they stopped making big blocks? Or are they similar enough to put the guts into a big block 727 case?

Just wondering...

I am sure you can find away to adapt it to the big block...There is alot of cross member surgery required to fit the transmission under the car. Most people give up on the swap when they find out about that. It might be more cost and labor effective to buy a gear vendors overdrive to put on the back of a standard big block 727

You also have to modify the trans hump towards the rear to make clearance for the OD unit and the mods are in the same area as the crossmember....

46rh

Thanks to all, I ordered a 46rh built to handle up to 700hp from PATC.... I will arive next week...to go into a 1970 super bee....should be some smooth highway driving...now I have to figure our what rear gears will give me about 2200 rpm at 80mph....that will be about perfect... Does anyone know the math to figure that out? I know 4th gear is .69

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks for explaining it better. That is really what I was getting at when I was talking about cross member surgery. From what i have seen the interior has to be removed and the cross member framing and drive shaft tunnel have to be cut out and fabricated larger to fit over the top of the overdrive unit of the trans.

anny and gear ratio

i'll let you know how it goes with the tranny and thanks for the gear ratio formula

not too many modifications required.. see pictures below on how you can modify the case and not the tunnel so it can fit.
