Why do all the parts vendors seem to want to sell the rosette rivets ( the little flower-shaped rivets that hold the vin tag on) for such ridiculous prices?
Do us car guys have "rip me off" stamped on our foreheads?
First, before someone brings it up, no I don't want vin rivets for illegal purposes. Sometimes they are necessary, like when i had to change the plastic dash pad in my 1994 Ram truck. The vin tag is riveted to the plastic dash and had to be transferred. I ended up finding a way to reuse the original rivets after just about fainting about the prices vendors are offering these rivets for!
And before someone else posts the myth, no they are not a "controlled item" or illegal to possess.
So, I have been racking my brain to figure out why everyone wants $25-$45 a pair for these rivets.
They are not a low production item and thus expensive because of low sales volume--there are about 7 million new cars sold in the US every year and every car has two--thats 14 million rivets, not counting the ones used for restoration and repair!
The only conclusion I can come to is---they just want to rip us off!!
If any one knows of a reasonably priced source, please let me know, I would like to have some on hand for the next time.
Well, I feel slightly better now, even if the rip-offs continue.
