I am slowly restoring my old Satellite and I was wonder what to use to paint the car after I sandblast it. It will sit around for a long time after it gets blasted/painted before it gets any color. Should I use an epoxy paint? What is the best thing to use if it is going to sit a long time before a topcoat? I am working under the car at this time on the floors, frame and suspension, not the body.

Why not leave the exterior alone until you are ready to get onto the body? If it is showing bare spots hit it with some "sanddabble grey"!

After blasting use a 2 part primer. Make sure it is primer/sealer. (which is usually same primer with hardener added) If you only use only primer it will still allow moisture in and rust underneath the primer. Primer/Sealer actually seals moisture out.

Make sure it is 2 part primer/sealer, any name brand would be good; I use PPG and also HOK.

The important thing is too make sure it is primer/sealer. There is a lot of info about self etching primers; but it is not necessary especially after blasting.

I use PPG DP epoxy sealer/ primer you can get it in several different colors as well. Matt

You can get the DP epoxy primer with or without the etch component. If you go with straight DP40 then you should prep the bare metal before applying any paint. Using the DP self etching stuff you can just apply to bare clean metal.

Of course the formula for the epoxy primer has been changed since I first used it. I think the old DP 40 had lead in it.

Thought epoxy primer could be applied to clean bare metal without using self etching?

It can be. I am understanding that most shops don't use etching primer anymore; although it is still marketed strongly. (This info is from a couple shops in my area and the paint forum) I personally have never used etching and have had no issues with peeling or flaking paint.

The best thing to do is talk to the paint supplier. The individuals at the supplier will have more knowledge than the auto parts suppliers. In my area we have at least 2 large suppliers.

I believe HOK and PPG have #'s to call for help on their products; I had to do this on a couple projects. The techs there were excellent.

Thats correct. Most shops no longer use etch primer. You will see a lot of primers listed as DTM or direct to metal.

DP epoxy primer with or without the etch component...

Depends on how long its going to sit but the etching is to make it more abrasive to hold the paint on good and it actually works into the metal. how long though, you really wouldn't HAVE to use etching now... Ron

You have to be careful with PPG's DP line of epoxies...I believe white needs etch primer and does not have DTM properties. They have made epoxy primers non-compliant up here in Canada...That really sucks. Good thing I have a stash!

There trying the same stuff here, last time i went to buy paint, candy apple red, Terry the guy ive bought paint and supply's forever from said, now this is implement paint for the Farmal tractor your painting? right Ron.. with a smile i said see ya next go Terry... They just do not want us little guys doing this anymore.. Like we can all afford to take it somewhere. I like doing my own work, car seems to look better, not because of my work as much as gratification doing it yourself, ill say this to any and all that start a project car, start taking photos of everything from start to finish. Later on long after you'll be surprised at what you remember about a particular day seeing a photo, not to mention your "WOW" I sure put a lot of work and time in this! worth 1,,000 bucks to have them...
