I was searching the web looking for a good price on a Purple cam and came across a thread from January. The guy posted the cam on that auction site but no one bid. I contacted him and remembered that he was an auctioneer and cleaned out homes and as a matter of fact was in business where I lived a several years ago. He sent me about 6 or 7 detailed photos including the photo of the front of the original box. The note on the box stated that the cam came out of a 69 RR and was only run 50 miles with the cam in it then removed. All of the lifters are numbered and marked for location and are still shiney and un-scratched. The cam has very minor surface rust on the journals and cleaned right off. Price was $10.00 plus shipping.

Second purchase was a fairly new set of P5249848 MP springs, 741-16 retainers and new locks still in the bag. Just what is needed for the above cam...
Price was $100.00

I have never purchased a used cam and if not for the fact that I just got back to work after being laid off for over 2 years and on a very close budget I wouldn't even consider it. So for about $110 bucks I got about $450.00 in parts that will get me closer to putting my engine together the way I want it.

Why Not?

Well why not? It couldn't hurt. Ordinarily. I would never consider a used cam w/o the spec sheet and close examination of all the lobes however,on a tight budget and for $10 bucks..........the worst that could happen is that you wasted the $10 and some labor. The important thing now is after you get it running; do a compression check for cylinder pressures and then you'll sort of know what you bought. You should have cylinder pressures near 130lbs in each cyclinder for a decent street machine and good midrange power. Let us know how it works out for you- :idea1:

Great deal, easy to look at and see if any of the lobes have any unusual wear.

Thay all look fine with no discoloration and the wear pattern is even.

I was at an estate sale and saw a 5x7 trailer that was formerly a soft top camper trailer. The floor was shot, tires were weathered, but it was marked down from $75 to $50. I saw some tires on rims in the corner - Durango/Dakota five spoke steelies with two trim rings and caps, all had tires that held air. The guy said buy the trailer for $50 and I'll thow in the rimss. Not a bad deal!

I got a similar deal on my cam. I was ready to buy new when I saw a local craigslist ad with the same cam I was looking at but barely used for $50!! Guy had it in a pickup and it was too much cam for his application so he swapped it out after just a few miles! Oh yeah, lifters were kept in order and I got a free voltage regulator new in the box with it!

There are some good deals out there to be had. I have everything but headers and I will continue to watch. Soon as it gets warm the work will start.

One Saturday I was just messing around looking at the local craigslist and Picked up a rebuilt 1969 dana 60 with 4.10 gear that had the rear drums changed over to New SSBC disc's along with new emergency brake cable, new summit rear leaf springs with all the hardare, and new still in the box frame stiffeners. We struck up a whole package deal for $1,600.

The guy had been restoring a rust bucket that he had bought on Ebay and from Ohio. Once he was told by a body shop what it would cost to replace all the panels, floor, and respray it, he gave up and bought another 69 Super Bee that was already done for 1/3 less money they were wanting. So he was just selling off all the parts he had gathered for the rebuild.

It was like Christmas had come early

My 915 heads came from Texas, Holley Steet Dominator intake from Arizona, Carter 750 Competition Carb from Idaho, New Mopar peformance valve covers from Va., Cam and lifters from NY. and a new still in the box B&M Quick Silver shifter for a lot less than new from California and the list goes on. I have picked up a few items from that auction site, mostly small things and some originals for spares.

How about this one...

We all have seen the 65 Belvedere/Satellite grills on ebay for gobs of coin. I saw one that included the headlight bezels and placed a bid and put my maximum. The grille didn't have the emblem, but it was pretty straight (much straighter than mine). I put a reserve of about $125 or something like that, and knew I would lose.

A couple days later I got an email and won the grill/bezels for ... are you ready for this? $57. I sold the headlight bezels to a friend for $40, so my grill was $17! The next week, another grille went up on ebay and it sold for $175. A restored one was $900, a nice one with emblem went for $300.

Sometimes you just get lucky and find a bargain!

Scored a 67(?) Charger rear minus the drums for $45. It had a 3.23 Sure Grip center chunk! The 3.23 is going to replace the 2.76 open in my brother's car, the housing got sold at a swap meet for $100.
