I'm in the early stages of renovating a '65 Belvedere I with a /6. Seeing a '74 440 motor for sale, I got thinking about that swap. Besides all of the mechanical items needed to make it work, I'm not real familiar with the smog controls, etc used in '70s. Can the smog controls be bypassed without trouble? Does this seem like a smart swap or should I wait for a better candidate?

Yeah, just strip it down to the bare essentials and drop it in. It might not be a stellar performer but that can always be addressed at a later date. If you're going to rebuild it eventually it doesn't matter one way or another. Good RUNNING engines are getting harder to find these days. I say go for it.
