Was wondering how common the console mounted cassette players are in these cars? I' ve never seen one before and think its kind of cool. Not an 8-track but actual cassette with microphone.

Also, engine that came with it is a 440 but is only marked with 440 on pad and 4-6-2 has no other markings on pad to include a date letter. Casting date is 72 and has no serial number stamped on block...was told engine had been replaced under warranty. Does this sound correct? I always thought there would have been a riveted tag on block but this one does not have it.

How far ahead of the times was that!!!

if I can find a "pod", I'm gonna use it to put an aftermarket "double DIN" unit in my charger.

I've seen just the plastic pods gor for $200 or more and complete pod and cassette players go for $250-600. OUCH.

BTW, the pods are different for consoles and non-console applications.

:) Great score then! When I was looking at car I saw the pod mounted on the console and it had a cd player mounted in it...I asked him if that was originally a cassette player and he was like yeah I have it in a box inside. Glad he saved it. Didnt mess with case either just set cd player in it loose.

I've known about this plymouth for 20+years and finally was able to get it. Isn't correct but will enjoy getting it back there. He airbrushed the stripes and emblems on it in 93. RS23U1G189XXX

The cassette player was not common in the years it was used 71-73 if I remember.

The base plastic was different on console or non-console cars otherwise all the components were interchangeable.

Not much different were the 1988-92 CD players in the Mopars. It used a slave CD unit that was connected by a cable to the radio above it that contained a cassette player.
Same idea: use the existing radio to amplify the CD player output. The radios had a special plug in the back for the CD player cord. In 1993 the CD was finally incorporated into the radio. Very rare too. AND expensive.

Not really on topic, but a lot of later model factory radios can accept an aux input. This is not very well known. If they have CD controls, as mentioned above, you can get a plug from a junk yard. Mine was the same as the other plugs, I just needed another one. and solder on a 1/8 jack. The select CD, and you can use your MP3 player.

GTX coming along

Have cleaned car up a little more. Corrected hood pin route, added the cragars and a painted ps mirror. Just put on new front shocks today along with putting front windshield trim back on and resetting wiper arm locations. Tomorrow going to tackle the dash issues. Have a new fuel tank and sending unit to tackle also.

FYI-71 was the first year for the actual cassette. Chrysler had 137 put in the cars. Mine has one. It would be coded R36 on the broadcast sheet and fender tag. Also, they did have a microphone and I have that as well but I think that was a "accessory". Theres a plug for the microphone. Yes, you can modify them to accomodate for a iPod and MP3. I will more than likely have mine modified for a MP3 and hide the jack in the ash tray. The plastic base is a little different between a cosole and hump mounted cassette. The only difference is a little curvature to the base to fit on the hump.

137? Is that for all models? Thanks. Car is in shop right now...drivers side outer tie rod decided to give out today driving home. Heard a pop and felt a shimmy and pulled over immediately. Tie rod literally fell apart on side of road. Im soooooo lucky it didnt give totally out while driving.

137 total for all in that year because its when it was first offered. I found a website (can remember where) as it listed options and of how many on all cars for those years.

GTX going Ski Green...aka Sassy Grass

Well time for an update on car...took some military leave and was going to change out engine/trans and rearend while off. Had to turn car in to body shop due to some rearend damage caused my myself THEN car got hit hard by some of our infamous St Louis hail during the storms a few weeks ago. With all this being said I put driveline on hold since car actually still operates and changed gears to complete bodywork. Well the shop that its at is a buddies dads and he has let me have use of place to do body work. Sooooo car is just about ready for a complete repaint in a correct shade of FJ6 Sassy Grass! Have ordered all the correct 71 GTX stripes to make look like a 71 versus 72 roadrunner also. Figured better use of time to repaint with free time...driveline can go in anytime. Within month though should have correct rear with new springs in, new engine and trans also. :)

My son refers to the new color as Ski green. I have to say I am sooo proud of my 8 yo son Anthony. This kid has spent the the past 4 days with me at body shop. Kid knows how to run the DA, block sand and mask like a grown up! He should be a helluva lot better than dad at this soon...which will be good because "his" 63 dodge 330 needs alot of work before age 16. :toothy10:

This is correct - warrenty blocks had no serial # on them - but you can drop a warrenty block into any car with the same motor and claim its a #'s matching car :)
