Hey guys, I'm pretty new here but I've been meaning to get on here for years, what a great bank of knowledge from such a great group of people. To the point, I'm looking at painting my Satellite at home in the next couple months (I've always been a d.i.y. guy, outsourcing just won't do). And I was curious, have any of you guys ever seen the seam between the roof skin and the quarter filled or shaved??? The thick chrome trim that covers the seam has always been one of my least favorite parts of the car. But I don't want to go through all the work (possibly irreversible) and not like the way it looks.

If any of you fine gentleman have ever seen it done, have any thoughts on how it might look, or actually have a picture of the job i'm talking about completed. I'd really appreciate the input.

(P.S. I'm not the kind of guy that wants to lower my car and shave everything smooth. But I think that this little "customization" might help out the overall look of the car.)

I have seen a couple cars over the years done like you mention. They looked alright, and to those unfamiliar with the cars, they probably went unnoticed. I prefer the mouldings. Good sets are available, second hand or reproduction.

if you look in the profile pics youll see that mine are gone, removed with all the trim holes and lead.these cars came with tons of bling and I was lookingfor more paint and less bling. anyways not many people notice there gone. dont know if this helps

Most of the ones I've seen have deteriorated bodywork coming back through. That area is prone to water sitting in the "valley" of the quarter, and also catches splash from the whel well, as well as drip from the rear windaw. My brother just had to redo that area on his 66 Sat, and found no less than seven overlapping laminations of sheet metal to create the structural integrity of the roof pillar. Most of it was surface rusted between the layers. NOT a friendly area to work in. I'm guessing it might stress a little there as well.

satellite plumah...I've tried to find the photos you are referring to but no luck. Can you post them? I'm in the exact same process of redoing the area as 67 satellite.

Well you asked! I have seen 1966-67 Satellites with that trim removed and in my estimation, it doesn't look right.
I have also seen that when the area has been filled, it usually bubbles out and looks even worse.
I own a 67 Satellite and I bought reproduction moldings. I have no problems.

well, thanks for the input and the pictures. i found reproduction pieces for an ok price. i'm really on the fence now, i've seen so many cars, it's just difficult to decide what i really like.. maybe keeping it stock would be the best route.
