I have a 68 Charger with A/C. The heater core is leaking. I am a little confused on how to get the old one out. I have taken all the duct work and vacum lines and linkage stuff off, and am left with the big box. The manual seemed to suggest that I can take off a "cover" to the box and pull the heater core out. I took out all the nuts and bolts of the "cover" and it doesn't seem to want to budge.

Do I need to unbolt the entire set up from the engine side of the fire wall and pull out blower and evaporator and all, or can I get it out just by removing the "cover"? Also the manual made mention of some clips holding the cover on? I didn't see anything like that.

Any advice would be great! Thanks

If it is the same as a roadrunner (should be) you have to remove the box from the car. Then you remove the rear cover from the box and then you can access the core. Now is a great time to clean up the box and clean out the inside. Then reseal and you are done.

You might not have to remove the whole unit. Once you have removed all the screws and nuts, along with the vacuum actuator linkage it should come off. You will have to remove all the front duct work so all you see is the defroster vents and the center A/C door. It should pry apart from the bottom as long as you have removed the heater hoses from the firewall. tilt the the whole front up and pull forward. If you don't know already there are rubber hoses inside that might be leaking and that is much cheaper than a core. You can see the hoses if you open the front A/C door.
