I just finished hooking up a new Holley carb on my 318 with new Holley intake manifold. It starts fine, but the idle sounds a little high. adjusting the idle screw doesn;t seem to effect the idle speed. i have backed out the screw and i elieve i hear a small backfire every now and then, and after shutting off the car most recently there was a gust of air out of the carb. This is my first time working with carbs and i would greatly appreciate any help.

sounds like a vacum leak...With the motor runnin spray some carb cleaner around werer the intake is bolted on...Al;so spray around the carb were it,s bolted to the manifold..If you have a leak then the rpms will go up and that is were your problem is...Also check to make sure all vacum lines are hooked up...

Also, check the rear butterfly to make sure it isn't opened slightly. There is an adjustment screw I think for those.

Thank you for the help! Turns out the throttle return spring that i used off the old 2bbl was too weak and couldn't close the throttle all the way. The car runs nicely now, thanks again.
