What could it mean?

As far as I know that "SPECIAL ORDER TAG" means it was a race built car or was a test mule for Chrysler engineers either way I'm sure it's a good thing....Some one else must know more about this then me so I'm out. :)

Body Type: R = Road Runner
Price Class: M = Medium
Body Type: 21 = 2 Door Coupe
Engine: J = 426 HEMI 425HP 2-4BBL 8 CYL
Year: 9 = 1969
Sequence Number: 179825 = 79825th Vehical Built

Thanks

I am really puzzled about the Special Order plate. That is the fender tag, and nothing else. Who/what would the special order be for?

I don't know

Thanks for that link, I like it.
I was thinking maybe a police car, as I heard about a few using hemi's back in the day. The draw back is there are no holes drilled under the dash where a radio would have been mounted. And why would they want a 2 door rather than a 4 door? Possible a race car, but it has undercoating. I suppose the undercoating could have been added later though. I just don't know what that special order means.

Could be it was a special order by a dealer...You know for his wife or kid...May not be a cop car at all...The governor of calif drove a satellite back in the 70,s and still has the car today and he is now the governor 30 years later..Jerry Brown...aka moonbeam!!!...

Really? Moonbeam lives about 10 doors down from my shop landlord. Might have to do some investigation!!

I am looking at this 1969 RR, and I am puzzled about the "Special Order". Any thoughts?

Is that the only fender tag on the car? If yes, it probably means somone swapped out the original for one they took from a cop car or fleet car.

If no, then the fender tag may give us some clue. Is the broadcast sheet present?

The most likely reason it is on the car is somone besides the factroy put it there.

If 'I'm looking at this car' means you are considering buying it, be very careful.

Cautious

I am considering buying the car. I have an inspection service checking it out next week, and if the report comes back favorable, I will go back and have a look.
That is the only fender tag. There are no apparent holes where a second plate would have been installed. There is the dash VIN, but I don't know of anything else. I have heard that there may be a VIN stamped inside the rear bumper, so I'll have the inspector look.
It has a dana 60 rear end, and the only other numbers are cast numbers of 2468330-2.
Anything else I can look at that you can think of would be appreciated.
Did police departments have hemi RR's?

Wondering

Thanks 74.
I may never be able to prove this is original, and maybe its not, but I do know for sure about the sellers personal situation, and he needs cash fast. I can pick it up for the price of a clone, and maybe I'll just wonder from there. I just keep thinking that there must be a way, another VIN stamped somewhere. Something....

Support Number

Really hard to read. Anyone with better eyes able to see? Is it white paint under the red, or black paint?

Vin.....

I just keep thinking that there must be a way, another VIN stamped somewhere.

On a 69 the VIN will be stamped into the core support on the driver side... either on the top or on the engine side and stamped upside down.... ALSO... on the driver side trunk rail, toward the rear... usually under the seal.

Take some modeling clay and press it over the numbers and pull it out to read it. You might have to hold it up to a mirror.

And as 74Sundance suggested....

Click on Page 4

Scroll down the page and you will find a data tag that say:

SPECIAL MASK
SPECIAL ORDER

.....No vin or anything else. It was a cop car.

guys please......

Cop cars have fender tags too.

If it was an ordered 'cop car', it would have come from the Lynch Road plant, where Belvedere cop cars were built, not StL.

A Special Handling tag would have been a second tag, not a primary tag. The OP admits there are no holes for a second tag therefore this is not the original factory placed tag. The original tag is missing.

No primary tag means do your homework especially on a supposed Hemi car. Don't worry about the tag, it's phoney.

Do worry about all the other Hemi specific items, that SHOULD be on a Hemi car. Be more concerned about buying a rebody than some non original tag.

Red flag. Be carefull...be VERY careful or you will wind up with a smoke and mirrors clone/rebody.

The VIN should also be stamped on the driver's side trunk rail.

No way in hell most cities would ever sign off on a Hemi RR for a 'cop car'. It would be far too impractical for police use and far too expensive to purchase and operate. Four door cop cars were made cheap for a reason.
