This thing has valve reliefs in the pistons! Is this correct. I know the history of this car and I'm 99.9% certain it's never been torn down. The 920 heads are closed chamber too and didn't expect that. And the pistons are down in the hole about .050" Now I'm wondering if I should hang onto the heads or not.....

interesting. i still have my virgin untouched 318 from my 67 b body. i might go check mine too

This car shows 67k and with the way the interior looked etc, I believe it and the engine looks good too except for it looks like the oil wasn't changed very often or someone used Penzoil with Z7 lol

Yup...2 barrel 318's, like 2 barrel 273's, have valve reliefs in the pistons...quoted as around 8.5:1 comp...usually lower in reality. Those heads were used for several years on 273's and 318's.

Well, the info I have says the teen had 9.2-1 in 67 and the 920 heads were used for two years. I could easily find out what the compression ratio is on this thing if I want to mess with very dirty heads. Chamber volume is usually what is listed wrong in the charts.....

I have never seen closed chamber heads an a 318 but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. You sure it's not a 273? I'm sure you're sure but had to ask. As far as I know only the 273 power pack had the closed chamber heads but those also had a piston with a very gradual dome. I think 67 was the last year for the 273 or was it 68? Anyway, sounds like ma had some parts to get rid of! Let's see some pics of this bad boy! 9.2:1 sounds like the makings of a super stock motor :icon_mrgreen:

I have to tell you the engine you have is not a virgin all 8 holes have already been stroked, after the rebuild it becomes a whore because then it has been stroked by other pistons, if you don't know a virgin block would be one that has never been stroked by the piston.

I'm sure....finally got around to tearing it down the rest of the way yesterday. This thing even has full floating pins!! And for sure has a forged crank. Not sure when the last year was for the 273 but thinking 67?

interesting. i also have a low mileage 67 318 out of my charger sitting here.

Some 273 facts

273 was not "PowerPack"...it was either "Commando"(Plymouth) or "Charger"(Dodge).

Commando/Charger was 4 barrel version of 273 engine.

All 273's had closed chamber heads and adj.rockers up to '67, then open chambers (318 heads) and non-adj. rockers through '69, which was the last year of 273 production. '68-'69 also got hydraulic lfters, whereas '67-down had solids, 2 or 4bbl. 4bbl cam was hotter. 4bbl option was disco'd after '67.

Heads, block, crank, were all the same whether 2 bbl or 4bbl. Cam, pistons, dizzy, intake, carb ,air cleaner and valve covers were diff. between 2 and 4bbl engines.

I just died laughing when I read this, too funny. Trueful

The '67 318 LA engine had closed chamber heads, at least on the three engine that I had. I still have a '66 cast date 318 LA sitting in the storage shed.
The advertised compression ratio was 9.2:1, but I never check what it really was. I did build a '70 318 for my friend, and we put the '67 heads on it to bump up the compression ratio.
