I am rebuilding my 440 and am looking to make 475-500hp / 500+lbft tq. I have a set of HP manifolds and have read all the debates about headers vs. manifolds and agree that headers can be a way to make cheap hp (I like cheap). It seems that the Hedman Shortys (1-3/4" tubes) would be a good compromise. Has anyone had any experience with these? I also noticed that they have 1/4" flanges as opposed to the TTI 3/8" ones. Will they be leakers? I am looking for the most trouble-free setup but still want the numbers (I know, I want it all).

Also, I'm looking at the Summit or Proform mini starters. Any experience? Opinions?

Thanks guys!

As for the headers..1-3/4 is fine for the street, but if you've got a high numerical rear-end(3.90 or up) and a high-stall converter you really need to look at 1-7/8" or larger headers.1-3/4 will give you low-rpm torque on the street, but not as much top-end power at high rpm range.

Thanks. I have a 3.55 and a 4-speed, so hopefully it will work ok. It's just street driven and will rarely see the high end of the rpm range......maybe ;)

You should be fine. I ran Hedman Elite headers on my old 440 that were 1-3/4 tubes and they worked great. Never leaked and my 63 with a mild 440 ran 11.49 @ 116 using them. Course now I use TTI 2" with my 493 eng. Ron

Agreed,,, Ran that dia on my 69 RR 440 too.
Like you I now have TTI 2" primaries on my 67.
I kind of like the shorty idea,,,, best of both worlds, and probably a hell of a lot easier to install.

'Bobs'-should work fine..A lot of people always go for "bigger is better" without thinking of the consequences. Street rpm's work great with 1-3/4 headers, they keep the exhaust flow going faster(better scavenging of exhaust). Hi-rpm's need bigger than 1-3/4
