318 poly / stay or go

I realy like the poly but i would like some input ,stay or go?
I had a poly and really liked it. They are a great engine. Next to a Hemi it probably has the best volumetric efficiency of any Mopar engine. Put a 4" stroker crank in it and you have a real torque monster.
Regards,

I agree the poly is a cool engine but do some research on parts availability and cost before you make up your mind.

My 66 poly with 88,000 and the stock 2bbl was already a torque monster. Simple tuning tricks allowed it to keep up with and beat many engines (mostly GM 350s) that had been rebuilt with cams and 4bbls.

As I've said before, the worst thing about a poly, is that everyone keeps telling you it's a big block.

Shoot...I had a /6 that could keep up with and beat some Chevy 350's back in the mid 70's lol. Any engine will respond to simple mods like intake, exhaust, tuning etc but like Meep said, do your research and then decide...

thanks for the input guys,i think i will stay with the poly . i`m just alittle bummed out about the intake issue`s.

dump it...sorry but I had one 35 yrs ago..it was not a
BB 413, 426, 440,....etc.
or even a 400 (383) would be great!

so I say let it go

put good money into something that will
get you a return.(your money back)

mrkinger,
i was talking about the lack of aftermarket 4-barrell intakes,i know there are options but not much.thanks

I have a poly in my 64 fury 4-door. GREAT motor and was fortunate enough to score a 4bbl intake. If you can afford to build one, or just want a cruiser that is out of the norm, keep it.

Otherwise nothing wrong with transplanting a small block, or even a big block. Very do able and lots more options for performance.

My charger had a 383, but I am liking the Poly 318 in my belvedere. Its bored .40 over but everything else is stock right now. Read an article awhile back about getting 400HP out of a 318. These little guys can rev up pretty quick too. I say go with the 318, put some 360 heads on it, intake, 4 barrel carb, etc.

I also like using regular gas and getting decent mileage right now. my 383 was pretty beefy and fast.... and a gas sucker. I miss the power, but its cheaper and smoother cruising down PCH with the wife.

Im not one to say I know everything, and i could be mistaken, but I dont think you can put a set of 360 heads on a poly 318.. if you mean put a regular 318 in it, with 360 heads.... ok.

but putting them on a poly would be news to me...

P-G-Polara;

While the "LA" heads will actually bolt onto a POLY engine, there is a water jacket issue within the Poly block that makes this conversion a crazy idea to do. However, should anyone be talented enuff to weld up the water ports, the possibility exists to do this. (I still would not recommend it unless it is the only option after the world ends and it becomes like the planet of the apes. LOL)

Here is the beauty of swapping the Poly out for a "LA", it is a bolt in.

Besides the intake issue's of the Poly draining your wallet, the head flow is the only short coming of the Poly head that holds back any big power out put. Many many "LA" parts swap over to the Poly engine easy enuff. That earlier 4 inch crank idea is IMO a great one.

Sonic check the Poly block for possible over bore sizes to 4 inch or more.

Racer Brown makes cams. He'll also custom cut one for you. I recommend a split pattern to help the exhaust side clear everything out better. This is more important on a Poly than a LA or B series engine.
