torsion bar(s) removal

i am getting ready to put in a new torsion bar crossmember on my 69 runner.So my question is do the bars need to come out completly or can i keep them bolted to the k-member and slide the old cross member off once i cut the welds and then slide the new crossmember on over the torsion bar ends or is it better to just take the torsion bars off the car completly?
 
I would just take them out completely since it only takes about 5 minutes to do.
 
just loosen the torsion adjuster completely, remove the spring clips. and tap tap tap it out . easy peezy japaneezy!

you should have the torsion bar clamp tool for removal,, but you can do this with a big pair of straight jaw vice grips ! (forgot to mention that)

They might give you a little trouble coming out, but it's nothing compared to fighting them while trying to install the cross member. Take them out, you'll be glad you did.
 
Funny how some are easy and some are not. Mine wouldn't come out without the t-bar clamp and a 3lb mallet. And yes, the clips were removed and the adjuster bolt was backed all the way out.

Don't forget to loosen the nuts for the strut rods at the control arm. Also, you may want to take off the upper bump stop as well. This will allow the LC to drop a little more, taking pressure off of the TB.

stubborn bars

was going to replace mine with the 1.03" PST's.

Beat on them for 2 hours with the removal tool and 4 lb mallet. Clips out and adjusters down. Gave up and got out the grinder. Both out in 10 minutes, and new ones went right in.
 
Do not bite the torsion bars with a vise grip. that will damage the bar and they may split in the future stemming from the teethmarks from the vice grip. Another way to remove the torsion bar if you do not have the tool is to back off the nut for the control arm and drive the LCA pivot back with a long bar and hammer. This should loosen all componants allowing you to slip the bar out. Mark the bars as to the orientation they were installed (ie. Front Right, Front Left) so they will be installed the same way. The bars should not twist in the wrong direction when they are installed. Good Luck.
