Got a '66 belvedere and I'm trying to see if i can swap a different differential with posi traction without too much modification. what models and years came out with posi traction that will swap in. thanx

In the world of MoPar it,s called a sure grip....Their are two types...Cone and clutch...Clutch is rebuildable and the cone is not without alot of work...Put a spool with 4.10,s in my car...It,s still streetable. And costs less than a sure grip...Look to pay about 300 to 350 bucks for a good used one...As for what cars?Almost all the muscle cars that had sure grip as an option or offered standard such as gTx..

You first need to ID the rear end you have in the car. If it's an 8 3/4 drop out type then a SG unit is not hard to find. Check A100 vans in pick N pull or just buy a new one from a rear end shop. I think the Auburn cone type is about $400.00 new.

hey 1bad gtx, just HOW streetable are spools to run on the street????? any problems that you have run into running it??

I would steer clear of a spool on the street. They are designed for drag racing not for going around corners and such.

I put in the spool early sept...It will grab a little on the corners...I have a land cruiser with a detroit in rear that I have been driving on the street too for many years...It,s one of those things you get used too...When to give it the gas and when not to give it the gas...I was,nt sure about the spool at first...Now I think i,ll build up another gear set with another spool...Just got to be careful with the gas pedal on slick roads!!!

Running a spool for a daily driver hot rod....not me. Too much of a hassle but for a street legal drag car that will see limited street use then I don't mind. Imo, you do have to learn how to deal with them when turning. Like at a stop and I need to make a sharp right, I like to stop a bit shy and get the car rolling straight when the light turns green and then go around the corner with minimum throttle and let the weight of the car transfer to the left. That seems to help take much of the load off the right rear and makes things easier.

It,s alot easier in a longer wheel base car...I get alot of body roll and sometimes just got to keep on the gas in my landcruiser...My gTx doesn,t get driven everyday. My cruiser even less nowadays...At one time my landcruiser was my only transportation...I guess the spool is not for everyone..You,d have to try it to see if you like it..

Actually, fixing a cone type isn't very hard if you have a lathe or know someone who does but if someone kept ragging on it once it stopped working right, then it's possible that it's junk through and through....

Where did you get that idea? It was optional in everything except Hemi equipped 4 speed cars that came standard with a Dana rear end.
You could NEVER get a Dana without sure grip but it was shown as a manditory option when Dana was supplied/required. It is a little confusing as it does not often show up on a fender tag or in the option sheets but the dealer pricing guides always showed it as a manditory option just as 3 speed wipers were a manditory option on cars with air cleaners that would not clear the 2 speeds wiper motors like Hemis and six pack cars.

Other engines that were ordered with axle packages beginning in 1969 had the sure grip included in the package along with the Dana and other things, so, again optional.

Do you find your tires wear a bit faster too beng you drag 1 of the tires around corners? Did that with my sure grip. Lol
