Just got the car before Christmas. Here's what I have been told about the fender tag on this car (attached) full vin: RS23L9A458023:
The bottom row...RS23= R=Belvedere/Satellite...S= Special...23=2 dr. hardtop...E86= 440/1 4bbl (375hp)...D21= 4 spd trans...012667= Vehicle order number. Second line... F8=Ivy Green Metallic paint...F8= Roof color (same)...P6F= P=Premium...6= Vinyl Buckets...F= White and Green (2nd color is carpet, insturment panel, steering wheel and headliner)...F8= Upper door jamb color. 3rd row...68= Rocker stripe delete...4th row 26= 26"radiator. 5th row...915=engine code 440/1 4bbl carb 375hp...596= axle code (3.54 SGw/ 9 3/4" Dana)...605= trans code ( A833 4 spd 440/426 engine) 6th row...production order numbers except the last sequence which is your last half of the VIN...9= 1969... A= Lynch Rd. plant... 458023= build sequence.

1) I believe this is a redline car since it is written inside the trunk lid (Red F-70), does the 68 mean the redline pinstripe was deleted?
2) What is the sideways G on the right side of the fender tag?
3) I got this car with aftermarket wheels, what style of dogdish hubcaps should this car have? I am assuming it is dogdish because the original spare is a body color wheel and redline F-70 tire.
4) I have had all the interior out and looked under all the seats but no build sheet. Any ideas where else to look?
5) Is the folding armrest buddy seat a rare option?
6) Original steering wheel is also gone, what style of steering wheel would this car have?
7) Would it be wise to have this car documented by Galen Govier since everything is numbers matching and all original (except for aftermarket wheels and steering wheel).

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi! slide on over to the welcome wagon when you get a chance!

have you tried looking on top of the glove box for a build sheet?

i have heard lynch road cars are their own animal, some things don't always follow Ma's convention.

Welcome and good luck!!

My info says the Lynch Road tags were not filled out completely even if it was a high option car - kind of like what Mar said. The 26 should be 26" radiator. The three digit numbers above the 26 are probably the ending of a part number of whatever is installed. The 68 is early in the tag so might be trim or like you said tires. A GTX is a top of the line car so it may not have come with the dog dish caps. The tag shows you have a 4 spd and that's sort of rare by itself. Based on what I have seen I would think more would have had the console as opposed to the buddy seat. The sideways G? Dunno. Maybe someone took the blue acid.

2) What is the sideways G on the right side of the fender tag?Typical Lynch Road plant inspection stamp

3) I got this car with aftermarket wheels, what style of dogdish hubcaps should this car have? I am assuming it is dogdish because the original spare is a body color wheel and redline F-70 tire.Dog dishes would be standard. The only way to know what wheel covers the car came with for sure is to find the broadcast sheet. Even cars with Chrome Road wheels recieved a stamped steel spare.

4) I have had all the interior out and looked under all the seats but no build sheet. Any ideas where else to look?

5) Is the folding armrest buddy seat a rare option? You'd have to check the Options and Accessories report to see how many cars came with the option. Are you saying the car does have the fold down arm rest?

6) Original steering wheel is also gone, what style of steering wheel would this car have?Several were optional. Again, the BS would tell us for sure.

7) Would it be wise to have this car documented by Galen Govier since everything is numbers matching and all original (except for aftermarket wheels and steering wheel).Personal choice. It does not seem to carry the importance that it once did. What documentation are you looking for? How long are you willing to wait? What will it mean once you have it?

Any pictures of the car?

69Coronetrt, are you saying the car should not have the lower black paint along the rocker? I do know the car has been repainted. Maybe it was added during the repaint.

No the black paint should be there.

I don't have a good picture of a 69 GTX stripe but there was a small stripe along the top of the fenders and doors. That's the stripe that was deleted on your car.

No C16 (console) or C21 (center arm rest) code on the fender tag. Most if not all center arm rests were coded on the fender tag as C16 for some strange reason. Either way it should be coded for the arm rest so likely it was added sometime in it's life. I think Doug will agree.

D, that's one of the first things I noticed and normally I would agree.

However...there is something much more interesting about this car that may override the lack of a code. Notice the VIN on the tag. For some reason, on or about January 20th (120 SPDs) Lynch Road suddenly jumped up about 230,000 VIN numbers on tags. This is the third known example of a 120 SPD LR built car that has a 458*** VIN.

I haven't seen a 121 SPD car to see if the 4***** VINs continue or if it just happened for one day. By 122, the VINs fall back into a normal sequence like nothing happened. So you have at least one day of out of sequence and exceedingly high VINs.

"Something" happened at Lynch Road about that time to cause an abberation in the tag making process and/or VIN assignments. That in of itself kind of makes me over look the lack of the code. It ws already screwed up so missing a code may not be a surprise.

I am curious to know if the dash VIN, body stampings and broadcast sheet match the VIN on the tag. I'd like to know if the VINs are consistent across all normal documentation.

Research continues.......

The vin on the tag matches the dash vin and the body stampings but I don't have a broadcast sheet. I have attached the dash tag. Do you need any other additional information from me?

Very cool.

The VIN makes for an interesting talking point about your car.

I'd like to more of those pop up to see if we can determine the range of 458*** VINs and if there were 457***s or 459***s

All of the '69 GTX's were black below the lower body side mouldings. They also had either a red or white (both reflective 1/4") stripe just below the moulding. See picture.

Hood stripes are an option on RR and GTX and is coded on the fender tag as V-something in 69. V21 I think? Anyway, the info is out there.
