Has anyone here installed one of those vacuum formed dash pad caps in their cars? The pad in my 73 Charger is all cracked, and i would like to at least cover it up for now. I plan on replacing the dash pad in the future, but for now i would rather spend $70 than $500.

Just curious how they look once installed, and if it is worth the money.

Also, i need a new carpet kit for the car, and was wondering if you guys have any suggestions which brand i should get. Preferably a molded carpet.

Dash Cap

I put one on my Roadrunner in 2001 and it cracked after 2 years. I got it from JC Whitney, made by Acuform. I called JC Whitney and they sent a new one no questions.
Be sure to remove all loose material where cracks are now and if there are any holes or depressions fill them with extra silicone when installing which is done with silicone. Use weight and clamps where posible.
The replacement was installed in 2003 and the pics are from 2010. They look better than a cracked dash and hold up good. Take time when installing which is what I did not do on the 1st one I put on.
I also replaced the carpet, don't remember where I got that. Either Year One or Paddock. Pics show my dash, white RR-blue interior.

I've only laid eyes on one, but it looked damn good. I've also heard good things about em. I plan on using one myself in my Cordoba unless I find a great dash pad replacement for similar money, ie:under a hundred bux.
Care with the prep and installation are the two important points I hear over and over, like rdrunner1974 said.
With carpet you really get what you pay for, there are no real bargains there...cheap carpet will look cheap. And it'll only get worse over time. Plus the poor fit of less-than-well-made molded carpet will make you want to tear your hair out. That's been my experience anyway.

You say you want to cover it for now... This is a older picture of my dash and if you look at the carpet type cover on my dash, i bought that at Year One.com My dash has 2 cracks in it, i now have the dash apart putting a set of gauges in and im going to put the new dash pad in (not ordered yet), but ill continue to use this as a protector to keep the sun off from it when im out and about.. it was $45.00 if i remember right, they don't look bad and theres the holes cut out for defroster. mine is a Satellite, same year as yours, im sure they can help you until you can get a new one. There real durable and look good.

I have a dash cap in my 72 Charger. Put it on 11 years ago. Car is garaged so it doesn't get beat by the sun. Have put 30k miles on the car so it's not a show queen.
As mentioned above scrape and clean all the loose crap off the dash. you'll have to trim it since every dash is a bit different. When I glued mine in I used some phone books to jam between the windshield and cap to hold it it place. Unless your at one of those snobby shows where they pick everything apart, not many people notice it's a cap. mine has pulled loose in a few spots as shown in my pics.

i went on jcwhitney.com and all they had was the felt overlay..can you send me info..the dashcap on mine is cracked..thx

This is on Ebay right now, You can check on if one will work for your cars, what i read i see they have one for a 73 Charger and have one for 71 Sat or RR.. My car garaged also, out all day in the sun, these caps, im not sure how they will take the sun, a cover i think is a good idea, You guys can check for yourselves if this will fit the bill for you, they were cheaper yesterday on sale but i didn't get there in time to let anyone else know, that im sorry for... I managed to get one for myself and hope its what i wanted.. They are in black only i think if it makes a difference..

Prep prep prep..the most important thing.
They do look good when installed right. Mine is comming loose at the front near the bottom of the windshield which is causing it to ripple, so doing it right the first time will save grief later.
If you want to go with the carpet pad I have one for cheap.
As for the carpet set, yes they are all molded and most are made by ACC { AUTO CUSTOM CARPETS}Lots of them on ebay for sale, I have gone that route a few times.
They have a carpet out now that has an extra heavy rubber backing on top of the jute padding which is call MASS backed. Stay away from that...just get the regular molded carpet. The MASS backed stuff it a real pain to install, I will NEVER order that style again LOL

PREP PREP PREP is RIGHT...if you do a good job prepping and fit 2 or 3 times BEFORE install you'll be good....I have had mine in for 2 years now NO problems or issues...be sure to use the supplied gooooo...that comes with...depending on temp it will take 12 to 24 hours to cure...but it does look good and fitment is XLNT...including a couple of pix..

I like your steering wheel poppa ;) I hope i do as good a job as you an NHCharger did there, looks great, im glad you and NHCharger left the pictures! Inspiration ya know... I had mine looking decent until i started to tear it apart but i had a hard time dealing with the looks of the two cracks in it, 7 years ago there was one, now after 7 years work i have two, i think there spreading, time to fix-er..

Ron73 ...brother you'll do just fine...take your time, check your fitment 2-3 times ...check all the contact points, if you have a crack or 2 on the orig....cut them out clean!!!!....slap on the goooo....slide it into place and weight it down...like instructions say...and let it set for at least 12 hours...and your golden !!!!!
TAKES more work to change a flat tire....lololololololol
