I just scored a 340 engine that has the following number stamped onto the block FW340P29950220, anyone out there that can tell me what it all means? casting date in 1969 - Thanks

It's not a T/A block :D There should be a day and month cast with the 69 too. An early 69 casting date may have put it into a late 69 car. I have a T/A block that was cast 11-28-69 and it ended up in a late 70 T/A Challenger.

More?

the block date is 7-8-69, any idea how to determine what it came from? also the heads have a large X next to the spark plug hole (never seen that before)

X heads came on 340 engines until about the 71 model year then they were J's. The 71's still had the 2.02 valves tho. The 68 through 70 should have 2.02 intake valves in the X heads. I don't recall any other heads coming on them during those years. A July casting date could have been in a late 69 Dart or Duster or an early 70. The E bodies didn't get a 340 until mid year or after January. Look on the front left of the block just below the deck surface and see if there are numbers there. They will probably be faint...not real sure if a VIN number will be there or not but there's usually some numbers there.

FW- is the assembly plant
340 = is the cubic inch
P = is premium fuel
2995 = assembled OCT 9th 1970
0220= 220 engine assembled that date
I believe that is all correct as its been a few days since I did that.

I have also seen O and U casting heads in 1970. Your vin stamp would be on the passenger side pan rail.

Matt

Thanks, I will check the pan rail.

Brother you have in your hands the Holy Grail of small block mopar heads..if they're not cracked or broken they are worth some $$$$....in cross referencing the casting block number...The bible is telling me your block is a 340 with a forged crank made between 1968 and sept 1971 released for anything from a 340 dart, demon to Challenger SPO ... hope you get some more numbers I'm really curious

I have a `70 A66 Challenger (340 Perf Package) that was built in November of `69 and my block has a casting date of July 9th `69. 340 was available from the beginning of the model year in the E-bodies allthough it was a late announcement for the Dodge camp.

Do you mean July of 68? If it is the original engine that would make sense not 1969.

I'm surprised no one caught the typo in Matt's post.

F= Assembled for installation in a 1970 model year car
W = Windsor engine assembly plant
10K date of 2995 would be Oct. 9th of 1969

:)

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't a motor built July of 68 be a 69 motor and a motor built July of 69 be a 70 motor? So if this is the case then a July of 69 340 would be correct for a 70 car built in November of 69 which would be the 70 model year.

Your right, brain fart. I was mixing up the dates of these two engines.

Trying to get a photo of the oil pan pad area but having technical issues - bad stamping as usuall looks like 0-124000 with a number 1 above, like I said I think it was stamped on a Monday!!!
Hope to post a photo tomorrow

.....remember Sept is the "NEW YEAR" model month... a block could have been cast in July or August 69 and held until assembly began for the 70s model...or been cast in July of 69 and installed as a warranty replacement, or a special order from April or May

your correct on that my friend it was supposed to be 1969. Would have been for a 1970 year model car. Like I stated its been awhile since I did that. Thanks,Matt

Ok Gents here it is - as I stated the following number is stamped onto the block FW340P29950220 on the drivers side below the deck and here is the image of whats stamped on the VIN Pad passenger side above oil pan. Might need to call the spirit world in order to determine where this block came from.

Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated

Have you ever seen a VIN Stamp this screwed up? like I said at the begining or this thread must of been a monday.. All help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Nice....that must be the day after a hard nite drinkin....OR a new guy on the line
I'd say build the engine and enjoy it... WELLL at least you know it's a period correct 340 if it's a show car, and I got ya a little info...wished I could come up with more...but thats all my Bible is telling me (is what I stated above)..bout your casting #

Just had a flash....by chance did you rec'v any paperwork with the engine, you know recipts for a machine shop or something....alot times ( or at least we did at Lunati ) we would stamp a the work order number on the block, be another way to trace the history....maybe ??!!

No paperwork or history at all, guy had a bunch of engines and couldnt remember where he got this one from. This is the car that will recieve the engine - she started out as a crashed and rusted 318 SE last thing I wanted to do was find the right 340 for her driveline. Sort of a SE/RT - SPO recreation!!!
