At the March Meet in Famoso, I ran across some center chunks and was looking them over when the owner started to talk with me. He said they were from a pontiac, I never knew they had a drop out section, and then I noticed the "clutch style" sure grip. I said you sure about that, haven't ever seen a sure grip in anything other than a Mopar. He said "they had them back in the real early 60's, before the 10 and 12 bolts were used".

Does this guy know what he's talking about or did I just learn something?? Sorry, but I didn't have a camera to take a pic.

What's this? None of the old timers can shed some light on this? Anything that you know or might know would provide some education on the subject.

63 Pontiac tempest super duty had a posi in it.
They were one of the cars that were a terror on the drag strip before the mid-size GTO came out in 64.

I trying to figure out if they had a clutch style sure grip, or was this guy blowing smoke.

I'll be damned!!

Yep, the early Olds / Pontiac rear ends were the thing to run back in the day. These go back to the late 50's I believe. My buddy has one in a 63 Tempest and he painted on the back of the housing "not a 9".

My 1960 Corvette Fulie car has the same 10 bolt drop out diff. with clutch style positraction original equipment. Also Other full size Gm products, Buick , Olds, Chev, Etc. had this same 10 bolt diff, although not all are posi. You will find these mostly from around 1961 - 1964

I never knew that, I guess I learned something. Old guys rock!!

every make had a clutch type posi, except ford, until 1969 when the cone type came out. they were not made by the car companys but eaton/perfect circle (think i'm right here). the cone types (auburns) were probably cheaper so everyone jumped on them except ford. ford had something called an equalock (?) that wasn't very reliable so the hot set-up for fords was a detroit locker. when trac-lok actually started i'm not sure but its kinda like a cheaper clutch type unit.

From my cousin Vinny.
Only two cars had enough power and posi traction to make those marks.
One was the corvette. The other was the Pontiac tempest.
Or something close to that.
Dam Marisa Tomei is hot in that move for many reasons...
