check the speedo cable??? lol (sorry, kinda slap-happy today!!)
 
Check that the cable is fully engaged into the back of the speedo. Often times the clips on these break off with age. But that should not keep it from seating properly as the cable is so stiff that it should hold into position. Usually you can reach up from underneath and seat the cable. It does require you be a bit of a contortionist but it is doable. Obviously also check the trans to make sure the cable is properly connected there as well.

if those are attached correctly pull the cable at the tranny and check that the gear is ok .
 
if by chance your speedo bit the big one , i have one for ya...rallye dash 68-70. it showin 72,999 miles.(...its the round one).
 
Thanks for the info everyone checked everything over all was good found a new speedo locally hooked it up and is working now.
