Removing a drum/hub from a tapered axle.

I must be doing something wrong... I'm trying to remove the rear drums off of my 64 Polara with tapered axle's. I've backed the shoes off, and I'm using a hub puller bolted to the lug studs. I'm heating up the drum/hub from the front with my acetylene torch, but the drum/hub just won't budge....
Are they always this hard to take off???

Here is how I got mine off. Once you get the puller cranked down with as much tension as possible, strike the end of the threaded pin with a 3lb sledge directly in towards the drum. It sounds backwards, but the shock waves tend to dislodge the friction and it will pop off.

However, there are plenty of times where people have had to cut them off after all else has failed. Hope it doesn't come to that...
 
Loosen the nut flush with the end of threads,and do some figure 8s in a large parking lot don't get crazy!Try hitting on the hub while you have the puller tight! They can be a real SOB most times!I've had some that would'nt come off no matter what!Then it's time to thrash it and put a 65 housing in its place.One benefit in that is you can put a wider wheel on.

When it does break loose, it sounds like a gunshot. Make sure the castle nut is still on it (loose, though), or you could get hurt when it breaks loose.
 
I've had some that no matter what we did we simply could NOT get them off.

45 years of corrosion and it was like they were welded together.

Put in a later housing and be done with it.
 
First you need to start with lots of cussing. I have found that when pulling or pressing something the stiffness of the apparatus matters so all the applied force goes into the part in question and not just deflecting the puller.
