HORRIBLE backfire issue

Just a thought, are you running points or electronic, i dont know if you mentioned that or not, but if you have electronic, Ive had a bad box or two control mod for the spark and both times they where the orange box , all it would do is start, okay, and about a half a minute into the run, just start missfiring, backfiring, and do everything else but run. changed to a blue box, or black box, and it ran like a champ threw both orang boxes away and called it a day, just a thought if you have electronic, because that sounds like the same thing that happend to me. good luk

not sure if this will help - but i had a similar problem - i'd be driving and it would just bog down, no power, almost stall - then BOOM! it blew the muffler wide apart. it would definately flood if i gassed it at all during the bogging. It would stall at idle and be a bit*h to start. sometimes, it would shut down at highway speed, i would end up on the side of the road messing with it

Turns out it was a bad condenser. the contact was no good, or something. when it lost contact, it would stall and if it made occasional contact, it would let out a huge backfire. in the OP, did you ever change the condenser?

Sounds like you have a couple of wires crossed. Double check the firing order.

Old thread....

Started tearing into the engine today - Prognosis is not good. Sludge on the rockers and an unidentifiable gooey mess in the upper radiator hose. =(

That sucks....but look at it as an opportunity. Build it the way you want it now.

None of this would cause a backfire. Did you ever figure out how the fuel got in the oil?
