How the heck do you remove the rear shocks on 67s?

I just wasted an hour and a half failing to get my rear shocks off. My problem is holding on to the nut on the other end of the top bolts. I can just barely get a crescent wrench around it, but I don't have enough room to hang on to it without it slipping off. There's hardly any room between the end of the bolt and the outside of the spare tire depression sheetmetal.
I tried getting a crow's foot wrench up there, but without an extension I can't fit a wrench up there because of the lip on the shock mount, and with an extension (really short 3/8 to 1/2 adapter) I can't fit it because it hits the spare tire well.
How do you hold on to those nuts up there? I just don't have any tools that fit properly in that slim space...

The way I removed mine was with a wrench that has a swivel socket on one end and open end on the other.

wedge it into place with a prybar.airgun the other end if possible, makes it a whole lot easyer.
