Looking for help on buying a power steering gear box for a 69 B-Body convertible. Any opinions on Firm Feel or Steer and Gear? They both seem like good choices but looking for someone who has dealt with them. Let me know your opinions, or if you have another company that does a better job? Thanks

I have dealt with Firm Feel and had no issues at all. I also have a FF box in my Dart (came in the car when I got it) and it works great. I can't comment on the other company.

Well, I'll comment on Steer & Gear then.

I have a rebuilt gear from them in one of my cars. Went with the middle firmness, don't remember their exact terminolgy for it, but firmer than stock. I've been driving it for almost 4 years now and no problems at all and I like the feel.

I have another rebuilt gear from them that goes to another car, but haven't gotten the car back together yet. Wish I had tried Firm Feel the second time, then I would have a good comparision of the two. I've been hearing very good things about FF lately. Not that I have any issues at all with S&G. Guess my deciding point was S&G was closer to home and I talked to them personally at Mopar Nats.

I have had dealings with Firm Feel. GREAT people, VERY helpful and GREAT parts. They would be my choice. That's just my 2 cents worth.

Steer and Gear out of business? The website's non-existant.

I'm looking for the steering coupler sleeve type seal they made to replace the factory style seal/retainer.

Any ideas?

Firm Feel Steering Box going in

Guys,

Just installed a new Firm Feel Stage 2 steering box. It's a remanufactured factory part, so it fit like a glove as you might expect. I ordered the fast ratio Pitman arm and Idler arm too, and the parts are all very high quality, well packaged and all inclusive. Pix below might help to answer some of the questions folks have asked in this thread, particularly about the bolts: 1/2 inch 12 point. The top pic shows two of the three bolts removed. The one on the left is a bit of a bugger, needing a socket extension at first and then socket u-joint later as it comes out. Run a tap through the bolt holes as was suggested. I did and the bolts went right in when I reinstalled the box.

I took the box out the top and put it back in the same way, but I pulled the exhaust manifold off to do it.

I did not completely remove the steering column, but DID pull all four retaining bolts from the firewall and loosened the three up near the dash to the point where the steering column was JUST about to drop loose.

I removed the Pitman arm with a $10 Pitman arm puller from Harbor Freight (worked like a charm), and removed the other end from the drag link (as well as the idler) with a pickle fork. Also much easier than I had expected - two shots with a small sledge hammer...

You'll see the 1968 to 1970 B Body Steering Box Extraction, Maneuvering and Lifting System that I invented for the project. It is available on ebay now for just $99.95. :toothy6: (Moderator: That's a joke. See the pic!)

I just swapped out my OEM power steering box with a Steer and Gear firm feel box in my Road Runner. I've only had it out on a 5 mile drive so far and I found it to drive much better then the original box. It steers much more like a modern car does.

Call Dick at firm feel, I bought alot of front end & rear end parts from him - great resource and products.

I have the stage 3 steering chuck from Firm Feel. Its GREAT ! I also opted for the Fast Ratio idler and pitman arms. This reduced the lock to lock down from 3 1/2 to 2 3/4 AND made the steering feel even firmer.
Mopar Actions Rick Ehrenberg recommends Firm Feel. They offer all sorts of cool stuff there from shocks to sway bars, reinforced K members..... Its worth a look.

I love reading Ebooger's stuff and was just looking through his articles on firm feel and their offerings the other day. I plan to use a lot of what they offer for stiffening and will probably go with the FF2 and fast ratio arms on the RR. Also thinking of adding rear sway bar from another hellwig, hotchkis, or another source as i didn't see one from FF but i plan to research articles to see which is best. And would appreciate FBBO's input for those that have tried their other products or from folks who have before and after experience or anything else to share regarding rear sway bars.

Replied to your other thread as well. I also have the fast ratio pitman and idler arms and love them. You will really notice the difference with those.

I have a level 3 S&G. I used them cause they were closer too me. That was 3 years ago, absolutely no issues.
