This week I need to order a higher stall converter for a street 69 Road Runner.
It's got a mild build 383. A Holly 650 spread bore, Mop Perf elec ignition, exhaust manifolds, and 2.90ish open rear with 245/60 14 tires.
The current converter stalls at 1950 (give or take) and it wont turn the tires over off the line but feels like it has good power once it gets motivating.

So.. this week I want to swap in a 3.23 sure grip, and am looking for your converter advice on what stall and which manufacturer to get it from.
I was thinking about 2800 stall, what do you think?

I'm thinking a 2800 with a 3.23 may be to much, cause it won't lock up while you're driving. With enough motor, an original converter will stall to about 2500 (on the brakes) and flash to about 2700. That's what the original piece in my 69 383 Bee did. That motor made a bit over 375hp. But in "normal" driving it would only stall to about 2000.

You may need more motor lol

I agree I wouldn't go with much more stall unless you drop your gears more for street use. a mild 383 isn't going to be that impressive anyway so don't expect to cure it with a stall alone.

You'll get more good out of gears like 3.91's than stall converters and high gears would be my take on it. unless you drive a lot of miles at high speeds that's what I'd do first, if you go from 2.90 to 3.91 you'll think you have 2 more cylinders until you get used to it.

I'm with ya on the bigger motor.

However it's not my car and it isn't in the budget.
So... back to working with what we have.
What do you guys recommend?

P.S. we're out in the country here in MN, and its a 20 minute drive to the 1st worthwhile town, so 3.91's aren't in the picture either.

When set up properly 3.91s aren't so bad. I got about 15mpg out of my Bee and it ran a best of [email protected]. No juice.

OK,
So far 1 vote for a bigger motor, and 2 votes for 3.91 gears.
Don't have the money for that.

We have the 383 and the 3.23 gearset.
What we don't have is a converter.
We do have the money for that.

Still looking for suggestions.

Well it sound like you've already made up your mind to slap a converter in it. (either because of cost concerns, or because you want a different converter)

All I can say is good luck.

Just to flesh out the story.
The trans thats in the car is making noises.
Whines like a manual trans in first and second.
It was rebuilt once before about 10 years ago, and had about 110,000 miles on it then.
So, before it goes "Bang" 80 miles from home, its getting a fresh trans.
Another trans is freshly rebuilt and sitting on the floor.
A local garage says we can use his hoist for an evening to swap it, but it can't sit there for 2 days while the converter is sent out to be flushed.

Last one I had done was by Phoenix Transmissions in Weatherford (they've done trannies for ONE LAP cars) You get what you ask (and pay) for with them.

I ran my 68 383 Road Runner with a basic replacement small block 727 converter and a .528 DC cam. I got 1800 stall out of it and it ran 12.65 @ 107 with 4.88's and 8" slicks (clearly improvement was needed in this area). You may have other issues if your car does not feel snappy off the line. My 66 Bel II has a 383 2 BBL engine (now 4 BBL) with 100K miles and single exhaust and it will boil the 235 70 15 tire if I let it. I have no idea what gears are in it but it cruises nicely on the freeway. If you have a stock cam just put in a stock converter. You basically want to match the converter with the engine torque peak.

I would go no higher than a 2800 stall with a fairly stock engine and a 323 gear.

We built a 72RR with a mild 400 and 3:55s. we used this converter, jw 50442 - 11" 2400 - 2800 stall. With your setup it may stall closer to 2400 rpm. This is a street converter not a race unit. You can buy from JW or I am sure you will find it on the web. As you get the car together i would change the 3:23 to at least a 3:91. Also use a good aftermarket trans cooler. Good luck!

2800 is too much. You ain't got enough motor. Fixed tranny,Stock converter and 3.55's will perk that car up a bunch.. Good luck
