Working on a 66 Satellite restoration (my first new car) and have discovered that the factory tach is the only electrical part which appears not to be working. The car (bored-out 383, 4-barrel carb, original 4-speed factory tranny and original console-mounted factory tach) hasn't been driven since 1980 (after major engine trouble and other problems), but the tach was working fine when it was parked. I'm beginning to wonder if the newly-installed electronic ignition system is the culprit responsible for the failure of the tach to work.

I'm hoping somebody out there has experience with a similar situation and can shed some light on what might be going on? Would appreciate information, ideas, suggestions, or other diagnosis of what the problem with the tach might be. Any insight at all would be welcome, and thanks for sharing.

sounds like you almost got it figured out, ..........it is the Electronic ignition, it won't work with the tach, unless the tach is sent off to a gauge shop and upgraded internally. I had the same problem before.

Thanks for replying. I'd appreciate any additional info you can provide.

(1) What shop did you use?
(2) Was the work satisfactory?
(3) What about the time frame for getting it done?
(4) Do you have contact information for the shop?
(5) How expensive was the modification to the tach?
(6) Does the tach register accurately after the modifcatig on?

Thanks again for your help.

contact Redline Gauge Works (661)259-8891, I used to work there, we used to do at least a hundred tach conversions a year for GM,Ford and Mopars, those console tachs were really popular.

I have Mopar electronic ignition in both my 66 Chargers that run the factory tach with stock tach sender...my tachs work fine with no issues.

What kind of electronic ignition you running?

Are you sure you have the gray wire in the engine wire harness connected to the "-" side of coil?

Is the tach not working at all, because I am having a problem with my 66 Charger factory tach that is also related to the electronic ignition conversion. I had the tach rebuilt last year. The sending unit (sardine can under the dash) was fried, so he built a new tach board that eliminated the sending unit, and hooks directly to the "-" on the coil. The problem is that the tach just bounces all over the place while running. The guy said I need an Autometer tach adapter, but I'm not sure how this would hook up.
