Was it worth it? I want your opinion!

Sorry if it sounds like im ribbing you, I am.
The guy has a nice project here and all you have to say is he wasted his time and money and should have gone deep into dept and bought it.
To hell with spending time with the son working on something and bonding.

Thats pretty brutal but good for a laugh.

That was very brutal and may have opened up a can of verbal whoop a#%!.
All must understand that there is nobody on this site that would intensionally be as harsh as he thinks 696pack is being. These are all opinions and observations being given to someone that asked for them and they come from a wide variety of individuals who have wandered down there own paths in this hobby to get to there own point of view. I think it makes for a good healthy balance and further seperates us from cattle.

Moo.

Awright, sorry if it looked like he was demeaning him for his chioce of car and how he bought it and wants to build it.

Ive been around a few blocks and seen many that buy it and put down those that build it.
I meant no disrespect too anyone.
Dont want ppl to get butthurt.

My theory "Its not what you buy, its what you build."
I dont care if a guy wants to build a 72 Datsun and dump $100,000 into it.
it's his, he loves it.

Just dont disrespect him for it. Laugh sure.

I mean, Dad just bought this Coronet.
Is it really crap not worth owning because its not a $50,000 running driving right now car?

Like a few have said before me, lots of shiny paint and excessive filler can be had to the unsuspecting purchaser for big bucks, at the end of the day you will know what you started with and what you will have when you are finished...I completely restored a boat a few years ago with no prior knowledge...I am with ya on this one!!!

Good Luck Bud!

Three, I can't afford one that's all done for $20K. Plus what is the point in that? So I can look at it? I want the satisfaction of knowing I restored this car, searched relentlessly for all the missing pieces, got to know people along the way.

That is exactly what I am doing, I have met a lot of great people along the way and it has been loads of fun!.

Yep, what he said.

I did the same thing (72 Barracuda)...paint and body were done and was about 75% complete, but needed lots of mechanical stuff and interior.....I got her together good enough to drive around last summer and then over the winter rebuilt the front end suspension, etc. Little bit at a time.....enjoying almost every minute of it, learning as i go.

I am keeping track of the money I spend in a spread sheet just for kicks. Its not about the money ....its the experience and pride of saying "i did that".....that is like a drug man.

Thank god for the web and forums like this......I dont know how people learned this stuff before the web...LOL

I like your car....I really like that body style...who knows, after the barracuda is "done" (are they ever, really?) I may look for one like that.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hey Roadrunner70, how's the front clip on your 70? I am ripping apart a 66 today and the whole front end is in great shape, aprons, rad support frame rails etc. I believe they are the same through 1970...can anyone confirm or deny this?

Totally worth it. You have the right idea and the right mindset. The journey is the best part. finishing a car is awesome, but getting there is perhaps the most fun of all!

I just turned 50, have a year and a half old son and another on the way... I intend to keep up with the hobby albeit at a bit slower pace. I hope I have the stamina to do with my son (s) what you are doing with your boy someday.

I am on my fifth resto and have kept them all. They become part of you. I have never regretted - not for a single moment - the money I have spent on any one of them. Don't ever regret, lament of second guess what it is you are getting started on. You will come to love every moment of the journey and look back upon completion with rewarding memories, newfound skills, new friends and a hobby that will never let you down. If there is one thing I did learn though is that the more I can do, the better the experience. More than one body shop frustrated me in my early days - before I honed my skills at rust repair and bodywork... now, I do it all myself (except color) and am able to save myself a significant chunk of change.

Enjoy!
