Power Steering Question

The car that I bought (64 Dodge 440) on the pump has what I'd call the return line ( barbed nipple ) looks to be around 3/8". On the end of the steering box where it connects to the barbed end looks to be 5/8". Now I've been looking for the hose but the previous owner must have discarded it.

Is the 2 different sizes normal? Or is one of these from a different car? This is not a high pressure hose right? Can I use 2 pcs. of hose with a reducer in between? Or get a pc. of 5/8" and use something tobuild up the end coming out of pump and clamp it on?:edgy:
 
The high pressure line has pressed fittings. On my 65 Coronet I used a heater hose for the other line because the two end sizes where different. The hose was soft enough to clamp down on the small end. It may not have been concourse but it worked and never gave out.

That is the return hose ports, the earlier cars had the bigger returns, sounds like your pump is older than the car.you could easily change the reservoir to the smaller tube to match the steering box, I think I have a really nice one in my shop that I pulled from a 64, If interested let me know and I will check on it and get you a price and some pics. 69, the bigger port is on the steering box and the smaller is on the pump.
 
Is this the pump you have? Can't get pics of the box due to it is at the shop.

Here is a couple of pics. of pump that I have in car. In the second pic. you can see on the pump the return nipple and on the steering box the outlet there also.

Ok, that is the same one as I have pictured but it appears that your tube is twisted/bent downward. It should be sticking straight up. That is the correct pump for your 64. It is called a Federal style pump. You can use a reducer or as I stated ealier use a softer hose and clamp it. It will work, had it on there for 10 yrs now with no problems.
 
I had a simular issue and was using heater hose. The hose needs to be rated for ATF. When I got the ATF rated hose and changed it, the old hose was very soft and ready to give out. Even though there is little to no pressure non ATF rated will allow fluid to leak if the hose blows. Just a SAFETY hint.
 
ok dont mean to jack the thread but my pump looks like the one wedge5 has pictured and the high pressure hose that fits it (parts store only offered 2 the chrysler and a saginaw) is the hose for the saginaw pump any way once i run it a little some how it binds and swings out (putting more tension on the belt) to the point of almost snubbing out the engine. now my battery tray is right beside the pump and the only way i can get it to somewhat work (surging) is if i run the belt loose enough so when it does swing out it hits the battery box with about the correct tension on the belt if you understand what im trying to say. so basically i can only run it with it hitting the battery box any thoughts of what my problem might be the pump seems to work fine its just that siccors style bracket seems to be allowing the pump to move and over tension the belt. it seems that if i had a solid mount bracket it would work fine?

Here is the deal, and I wont try and sort out all the thread divergences. 62 to 67 PUMPS all some some slight differences. The key hose function difference is the change in 67 to a small Return hose as is pictured in Joe Mopars photo. The wedge5 photo is a 66 pump with a 5/8" return hose. Steering boxes naturally for the years match fittings for the correct return hose. that top fitting can be changed.
DO NOT try and use some hokie hose reducer to mis match pump-box.
Resevoir cans can be changed, fo r the most part.
fyi the scissor type is more seen on C bodies.
and yes, one needs hydraulic hose spec for the return line. not heater hose.
 
Yes get the right hose if poss. Wish I had this info when I did mine. I guess I dodged a bullet cus mine never gave out. Just my opinion: The federal style pump is a crap design. I could NEVER get the seal/gasket on the backside of it to stop leaking. If you can swap over to the Saginaw.

I had tons of experience with all three Mopar pump, The Federal, The Thompson/TRW and The Saginaw.

The Federal is the best built pump of the three it is a "Roller" design, The Thompson/TRW is the second best it's a "Slipper" style pump, The Saginaw is a "Rotary Vane" style pump and my least favorite.

You probably had a reservoir that was bent slightly out of round and cause your leakage problems.
 
Maybe! Asked some other Mopar guys that had them on their cars and they told me that theirs leaked also and always had but that doesn't mean anything just my experience.
