OK so theres two questions im gunna ask here. First if you mod a 318 with new parts and all and get 400 hp or so could you put a 727 trans on it? Theres a article from here http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/techarticles/mopp_0409_318_engine_build/index.html on doing this. But I've been asking around about this and I'm thinking that it'd be better to buy a 360 and do that stuff to it for more hp. So what would I need to do to swap out the 318 and put the 360 in it? Still havent bought my Charger but im looking at buying a ok one with no engine or trans to possibly make the swap easier.

Well since you could get a 727 behind a 440+6 or a Hemi.....yeah....one would hold up behind a 318

Only real difference in a 318 to 360 swap are the motor mounts and (since you're talking 727) the balance of the converter. In actuality the harmonic balancer will probably be a different thickness, so you will probably need a different crank pulley as well

Cool sounds complicated but cool! Im pondering the thought that I should by a 73/74 Charger without a motor or trans then buy a 360 cheap and put that in place of the 318.

The thing about getting a car with a motor (running or not) is the fact it will have lots of parts you're going to have to scrounge up if no motor is there

Oh ok that sounds right but I am trying to get a 73 Charger on a lower budget... Well its no budget right now because im recovering after I hurt my self... Thats a really long story. But I am trying. Most of the 318's I see being sold go for around 2,000 and almost ALL of them are SE's. I dont have a problem with SE's like i did 5 months ago but still. People put the prices at 2000 or high because of it. Now IF I could find a standard or rallye that was going for 2000 or lower I'd go for it alot faster then a SE.

I really really like the stadard/rallye look. But the SE are the most abundent the look has grown on my finally...

Axels...the 360 has the potential to yield you more horsepower since it has a larger displacement, so if you're willing to spring for the block & crank, it's not a bad way to go. There have been numerous articles out on getting 400hp out of a 318. I've done 2 mild builds on 318's and got 325hp out of them with a cam similar to the stock 340's, the swirl port heads and a Performer dual plane intake. With a cam around .480 or so lift and a single plane intake, with modified 360 heads, you should be able to hit 360 to 400 hp on the 318. The A-904 is a very stout transmission and can handle up to 400hp. I've remember a back issue of Chrysler Performance (1993 or 1994) that a lot of bracket racers were going with these behing their small blocks because the 904's internals are smaller than the 727's and wind up a little quicker. They would add a set of heavy-duty clutches (5 total instead of the stock 4) to reduce slippage.

Also as far as wondering what you would have to do to drop a 360 in place of a 318..nothing. They share the same dimensions. HOWEVER....the 360's torque converter is balanced for that 360. If you bolt that 360's trans to your 318, or your 318 trans to the 360, you'll get a lot of driveline vibration (I've made this mistake). The 318 is considered neutrally balanced (i.e. no weights on the converter). Now you can take that torque converter and knock the weight off of it with a chisel, but I haven't tried this.

swaps

This is a general discussion on engine swaps. Just got done reading two sad stories of poor choices on engine / trans swaps on FABO FBBO site. The common denominator is "trying to get by cheap" and lack of knowledge on interchange. This is usually caused by inexperience and listening to the siren song of trying to out engineer the factory and listening to the seller of a component saying , 'sure it will work'. Compounding the problem, these days , is there are so many hashed projects out there, missing all the right fit parts on the car. This leads to buyers not even knowing what is correct on a car. I have a huge advantage, in that I have been playing with mopars for 30 years and I learned on intact cars, and I took correct cars as the standard. I know that is not the case anymore.

My comment on a 360 vs 318 in a larger car, ie 70's B body. Forget your big balls idea of horsepower of one over the other. You need 'torque' to move a 73 charger. The 360 was designed to provide that performance characteristic.

cheers red

I am thinking of going late 360 FI in place of the poly and this seems to be an area that not much is known about or I just havent gotten to the right resources. I am also considering a auto with overdrive. But none of the trans shops up here know what works or what mods need to be done. Typical donor vehicles are Ram Vans, Ram trucks and if lucky Dodge Dakota. The 66 Satellite has a floor shift and center console which I would like to retain. I think I have bugged everyone about this but I sure would like to get this done.

So far no response but I will hold out hope or just go for it and as usual figure it out as I go. I think a lot of us have gotten our education this way so when a problem comes up we are able to figure it out some how. That is part of the fun for me. I just dont want a hacked project when I am done I hope to have a great running B body that you cant buy at any dealership. So if any one has done a late 360 with fuel injection let me know what to watch out for and need to get.

OK,

I was thinking about both of these topics. 318-316 swap... I ended up choosing the 318. Something about the challenge of pulling on a big block car at a red light is appealing to me. ( not that I endorse stoplight drags ) . . . Wait a minute who am I kidding, of course I do!

But, about the F.I. on a original carb engine... I looked into it and the system I almost bought is now in it's second generation. From Edelbrock. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/efi/pf_intro.shtml

If you think about it, the only changes that need to be made are to the fuel delivery system, and a new computer... The car itself doesn't change and only the induction system and a Bung for O2 sensor need to be added. The Edelbrock kit is all inclusive.
Or there is F.A.S.T They offer interesting products and should have a Engine Management computer if I misunderstood and the stock induction will be used. http://www.fuelairspark.com/ezefi/default.asp

Hope that helps.

The newer Magnum 360 has both mounts....Here is a pic of a Magnum block. The mount with the ears on the left is old style mount. The flat mounting Pad on the right is the Magnum style truck mount.
