Hello,
Could someone with hands on experience please give me a layout of proper steps and procedures to follow so that I might find the problem with this fuel gauge and get it functioning again? I am not very experienced with automobile electrical circuits. Your expert advice would be very much appreciated!

First thing to do is ground the sender wire. (with the key on) this should cause the gauge to peg. If it does, then you know the problem is probably the sender. If it doesn't peg, then the gauge might be bad, or the speed nuts on the back of the I.P could be a tad loose, or there may be a problem with the wiring. If the other gauges work, then it's not the voltage limiter.

:yes:Also make sure you have the 2 1/2" long ground clip installed, located near the front of the sending unit/fuel tank

Sounds like a great place to start!!! Thanks very much to the both of you!!!

Still no working Fuel Gauge

First thing to do is ground the sender wire. (with the key on) this should cause the gauge to peg. If it does, then you know the problem is probably the sender. If it doesn't peg, then the gauge might be bad, or the speed nuts on the back of the I.P could be a tad loose, or there may be a problem with the wiring. If the other gauges work, then it's not the voltage limiter.

The sender wire has no current flow at all. The gang plug that plugs into the pins on the instrument panel carrying the dark blue wire for the fuel gauge sender has no current flow. The temp gauge isn't working either. I have tried 3 different voltage limiters (used) and nothing changes. Speed nuts are snug. There is a ground clip for sending unit and I have it clamped onto aluminum fuel line. I have found a clipped black wire that is hot (has current) just dangling behind there. Any ideas as to what it would go to? Any recommendations are welcome!

The gauges work off a floating ground, and have a common power feed from the limiter. If none of the gauges are working and you've tried several limiters, then the trace for the power from the limiter may be bad

Thanks! The circuit board did look a little rough. I have another instrument cluster coming that is supposedly known to work. That black wire hanging loose has got me stumped and I have a diagram. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I will try to get one. The camera I have produces an image to large to download on this site but maybe I can reduce the image on the camera itself. ???????? I will try it sometime this week. Thank you for your response concerning this issue!

send the pic to me and I can reduce and post it. I'll send you a PM with my email addy

I got another instrument cluster this morning via E-Bay and just installed it. It works!!! Woo Hoo!!! Thanks 69 Runner for ALLl your help!!! You are a great asset to this forum and I do appreciate you!!! Mopar to YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I could not download the photo's because this laptop does not have Photo Manager to reduce the pictures for downloading.

Glad to help, and glad you got it fixed. That always is a big booster....to get it working again. And speaking of that, tomorrow (Sunday) I'm gonna try to fire up this 70 runner I've been working on. I trust my part of this operation, but as for the rest of it?????????????

With your vast knowledge of how these things work I'm sure you will work out any problem that might confront you. Have fun and God Bless You!!!

The fuel gauge problem seems to be taken care of so now I am focused on the temperature gauge. I have grounded it at the sending unit connector plug and the temp needle moves just a little but doesn't peg all the way over. Also, My test light flashes on and off when I test for power at this same connector plug. It that normal operation? If not, what is wrong? Thanks!

gauges

The wires for both the fuel and the temp gauge "at the sender end" are the ground side of the circuits. They vary the ground and cause changes in the gauge. You can usually visually inspect the circuit board for damage from the pin to the gauge.I went through similar problems with my 68 after buying a couple of "known good" dash clusters.

It looks really nice with no imperfections. Is it normal for test light to flash when grounding the sender plug or should the light remain constant?

I have learned through research that by grounding the senders on either gauge with a test light the light should flash on and off due to the limiter pulsating power. There is power to the temp gauge but I'm gonna have to say the gauge is bad.
