late model hemi into early b bodies

Still Workin'...392 (The True Hemi) on my '65. jUsT cHeCkIn with you guys. I have been watchin' 'n readin'...but RL has been crazy...

All your work is VERY Well Done!

I am also restoring a 64 Polara. It's on the rotissary getting frame connectors so now is the time to do the 5.7 Hemi change over.
Was it necessary to reshape the trans tunnel for the 5 spd automatic?
What brake conversion did tou use?

Keep up the great posts.

B392Hemi, thanks for the compliment, how is yours coming along?

Avidflyr, for me, I had to cut out the entire tunnel up to the pinch weld and just past the torsion bar crossmember to fit that huge trans. I used a k frame from a 68 charger because no one made engine mounts for the 62-65 k frame, only 66-70 b, and 70-74 e body. This moved the engine/trans back around 1 3/4 to 2 inches. Now there are engine mounts for the 62-65 k frames. Will this necessitate cutting the tunnel, YES, how much, dont know.

I got the disc brake conversion from HotRodsUSA about 4 years ago, then bought the braided flex lines for the front and rear about 2 years later.

What's up Zack, how is the tear down coming?

I'm off work this week (vacation and the kids are in daycare) so I'm working my *** off on the car and household duties. The firewall, inner fenders are ready for primer, it's funny how thw factory undercoating doesn't stand a chance when you use a 3000psi pressure washer on that stuff, it worked great. I did find some rust in the back window channel, so I got it down to bare metal and will lead the few holes in, they aren't very big, maybe a 1/16 so the leading will be perfect for that.

5.7 Hemi,
I am new to the forum, but I reviewed this entire thread with great interest since I am having a 2003 5.7 with 5 speed installed in my '73 Challenger. You've done a super job of documenting your project and it really helps those of us just getting started. The engine is beautiful, but how did you get it so clean and shiny?

Hey 73Chally, welcome to the forum. Thanks for the compliment. To answer your question, I got some chrome valve covers, polished intake tubing, ceramic coated header with the thermal barrier inside, then took off the accesories, painted themthen slapped it back together. Nothing extreme or fancy, just a thought in my head and some elbow grease. Show some pics when you start your Challenger, I look forward to seeing them.

I'll post pics of what I got done this week on Sat. The primer turned out nice and now comes the more difficult stuff, (dents), lucky me!!!

Here are some pics....enjoy.

Got the paint today, dark charcoal metallic gray. Still have some body work to do, but it should get color in 2-3 weeks if all goes as planned. Can't wait to see it in color.

Hell no, but that is why I took pictures when I tore it down. And you that I will be askinf questions when I put it back together cause the inevetible will happen.

Woohoo, the car is now totally primered. Let the fun, er work, begin.

Yes it is and so today I just cleaned up the garage and found some parts that I thought I didn't have, maybe should get a lotto ticket?

WoW, I'm impressed, you actually doing some work! Looks good, take your time and don't rush, everybody can see the paint, so if that dosen't look good, they don't look much further..

Gee Tin, I thought you took a looooong vacation. I want to paint it over the 3 day weekend coming up, so I have been busting butt after work for a few hours each night. Can't believe how many "parking lot dings" I missed the first time around, guess having only 1 eye has some disadvantages...Ha. So I keep plugging away, It's got to be odd to watch me work, I put my face as close to the work as I can so I can see what the hell I'm doing, so we'll see how it turns out.

Got a notice from the city a few days ago, here is the jist of it....No cars that are inoperable, boats, trailers, jet ski's, blah blah blah shall be parked in your driveway per municipal code yada yada yada...... you may have it stored in the city inpound yard until you get a place for it. Then in the SMALL fine print, a car may be stored in your driveway if you have a car cover on it. Either I have some pissed off neighbors or the city is out trolling for money cause I see the boats, jet ski's, campers and trailers in peoples driveway all the time. So I went and put the car cover on it and called it good for now....the city will have the last word I'm sure of it. I just gotta hang in there till the end of the month, and it'll be painted and in the garage for the duration of fall and winter.
