need rearend help

I've got a '65 Satellite and I plan on putting in a 500 horsepower big block. The car will be used 95% on the street but I may throw on some slicks and make a couple of passes down the quarter if I'm at the Mopar drags. I will be running a 727 auto and this is my question....
The car currently has an 8 3/4 suregrip under it. Will it be strong enough to handle 500 horsepower? Should I go to a Dana 60? If if stuck with the 8 3/4, what should be done to it? Axles?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
 
Check the seral number on the left side of the third member. There are three types the on with 489 as the last three numbers is best to use.

There's really nothing wrong with the 41 or the 42 case except for finding gears for the 41 which now a days, the selection is slim. I personally like the 42 over the 89 since it doesn't use a crush sleeve but you can buy a solid spacer for the 89 and I would highly recommend doing that if you use that case.

The 8 3/4 is fairly strong but the 60 is a bear compared to the 8 3/4 but the 8 3/4 should hold up to 500 hp.
 
i personally dont know but i heard this discusion before someplace and it was said the 8 3/4 was good upto around 650 engine hp any thing beyond needed upgrading. like i said this is just hear say so take it as you would
 
A 440 with a stick & slicks,then I'd think about it,more than likely the u-joints would fail first.
but w/an auto. trans. it wouldn't be any problem at all.
 
They used to run Max Wedge cars with the ball and trunion, small pinions, tapered axles and three speeds. If you run low gears you should be OK.
