Bought a 73 RR - 340 car, buckets, auto, console, A/C, 8.75, etc. All original, 95K miles great codition, currently stripped. What's neat is it's a triple black car. My dilemma : since it has the full vinyl top, it was ordered without side/roof stripe, but does have white hood graphics. It's a little unique but my deal is I'd prefer the side/roof stripe (to me - that's signature RR). Obviously I'd be eliminating the vinyl top. My feeling is right now, it won't harm the value of the car as the 73's and 4's aren't as collectible (yet). Suppose if someone had to have it original one day - it could be added back (even though I'll be grinding off the trim studs. Any thoughts ?

I have a 1974 Satellite Sundance it also has the vinyl top and I want to remove it but have the same dilemma as you.The car is "RARE" but not really desirable/valuble.I'm thinking of just taking a ton of pic's/measurements and making a template of all the studs before I cut them off.

That's what people said about the '73 '74 Challengers. Give it time, they will come around too!

Wow!, a '73 triple black 340, Road Runner, that is extremely rare,I've never seen any triple black '73 or '74's,
I'd do it back to stock, or it'll just look like all the other '73's (not that it's a bad thing) but it would really stand out at the shows.

here's a picture of my '74 360 Road Runner, in 1991 (no stripe) that was the original paint/vinyl top.

The only Mopars I have ever really liked a vinyl roof on are the 68-70 Chargers. Something about the big c pillar and recessed rear window just seems to make the vinyl tops look great on those cars to me. I know vinyl tops were pretty popular on many luxury cars in the era, but I just don't see the point on most muscle cars. Every Mopar except the 68-70 Chargers just looks sleeker and more muscular to me with a painted roof. Just my opinion, for whatever that's worth.

Don't do it! Originality is king, leave it as is and love it for what it is and be happy in the knowledge that you have something unusual. I've seen plenty of cars that people did funky things to because of what was trendy (or so they thought) at the time only for a few years to pass and they, or the next owners, are madly trying to get it back to how it left the factory. I just think that having something no-one, or hardly anyone else has, is kinda cool.

74Sundance - I like the idea of taking pics and marking the stud locations if anyone wanted to take it back to original. I just don't think it would be that tough. No plans to sell it, with A/C and all here in FL, I'm going to enjoy the car, it'll still be all original. I don't think when it came down to it (selling) - it would make a difference either way. On the other hand it would be a little different at the shows with the top - I'll keep thinking about it. Here's a pic of where it'll be if I go without the vinyl :

It your car and do as you would like it. It not like your chopping up a hemi car. A vinyl top can be put back on with a little work.

Frankly I'm with you, it looks better without it.

I agree with Vet on this one.....Take in mind i'm no numbers cruncher and build cars the way I want them. Value with these cars are in the eye of the beholder for the most part. It's not like your painting a giant Kung Fu dragon down the side of a Superbird. I can't see value moving much with your Mod.

Your car...your call....

just my opinion

Wow very nice car, ditch the top lol.

If you paint it as though it has no vinyl top and wax or treat it with a poly sealer and then put the vinyl stripes on the car you can remove them later without damaging the paint. You could then install a vinyl top again and it would be back to as built from the factory.

The problem is all the little metal tabs that the trim attaches to across the roof, they need to be cut off.Putting them back on is the real problem if you ever wanted a vinyl top again.

A full vinyl top does not look good on these cars period.I would go with no top and a stripe or the rare canopy vinyl top and the stripe.

I've got the rare canopy vinyl top, that's why I have the trim studs in the way of a painted smooth roof.

Thanks for all the feedback. Also, there are some real nice removeable Kung Fu dragon decals (I've seen them on imports), so you could always remove them from your Superbird if you got tired of the look. :rolling: somebody needs to Photochop this scheme !

too bad you couldn't leave the vinyl top on and just put the stripes over it.but i don't know how that would look.:shruggy:

This is what I'm thinking of doing...Sorry I'm not that great at photo shop lol
