383 mopar vs 350 chev

Some people see the 383s as the 440s poor cousin, but because of their short stroke and good rod ratio.......you can rev the crap out of them without throwing a leg out of bed.

I run my 383's very hard and they always hold together.I have turned mine 7800 Rpm but try to keep it 6800 Rpm.

I ran 1 of my 383's up to 7800 before shifting once, and blew up a heater core in the process. Didn't do that again. Engine was fine with it though.

I like the shorter stroke of the 'B' engines and they give a bit more room in the engine bay too. And you can make a little engine scream and stick it to a longer stroke engine.

I think the technical term for more bore than stroke is the potential oxmoron "oversquare".

Piston has more surface area to react to combustion and shorter distance to travel while under greater force.

It's true. A deep skirt block, long rods and way over square design makes a 383 a big indestructible small block. I bounced my tach needle past 8000 RPM on a missed shift with a cast piston 383 twice and no problems. The reading might not have been real but it did sound like a chain saw. Only thing about running high RPM is you need good gas that burns properly at those speeds.

As someone once said......A 383 is a Big Block that thinks it's a Small Block.

I call it a baby big block. A stock stroke 400 makes a good screamer with it's larger bore. You can use large valves without the shrouding that a smaller bore has...

Longer stroke just means more tourque...My next motor will be a 400 block...Sure the 440 is a great motor,so is the 383...Now the 350 you are refering to is just that a 350...They are cheap and everyone puts them in everything...From model A,s to datsun z,s...Hell I got one in my 72 toyota landcruiser....A TRUE MUSCLE CAR IS A MOPAR!!!!
67 GTX
I,d rather push my PLYMOUTH than drive a ford!!!!

Haha, I thought I was the only one to ever do that ! I blew the heater core up in my 67 Dart GT ( 340 & 4-speed swap)
