Hello all,

Next summer I plan to start a new project, a super bird clone. I’m not new to restoring a car, I started a 1984 El Camino restoration project in 1996 and finished in 2003 (money constraints) but end result, a show room quality car and 350HP of fun. I also took auto body classes at night to learn how to properly do the work myself at a local Vocational school while going to high school. Here’s a you tube video of my restoration (missing lots of pictures) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knPDLDk65eI

I also did a 84 S-10 Project. Stuffed a 400 Small block in there and used it as a daily driver for about a year (boy that was fast!). Also helped a few friends on a few restorations, 68 Firebird, 69 El Camino to name a few.

That was a long time ago, I’ve missed working on a car project ever sense. I can’t hold out any longer I need a new project to get back the joy I once had of a project like this. All my gear head friends moved away and I’ve been itching for years to get my hands dirty and work on something.

So I decided to search for my new “dream” car project. My guide lines on my search, had to be manual and had to be a big block. Two things I don’t experience in my El Camino. I decided on a Dodge for two reasons. One, you don’t see Dodges at car shows as much (at least the ones I take my El Camino too which is about 12 different places). Two the sound! The unique sound of a 440 demands respect! The 1970 Super bird can’t compare to any other car choice out there, sure there’s lots of cars I could see myself driving, Cuda, Super bee, Dart etc.. But nothing holds up to the Super bird!

So I started doing my research and quickly realized that a real super bird is way out of my price range. Depressed I decided on a 1970 Roadrunner, just finished getting my affairs in order to start saving for my project and discovered Super bird clones. My excitement renewed I started surfing for hours trying to find out everything that I could.

Factors on my abilities play a big part on what project I can do. I’m still conducting my research to see if I can pull this off. Bolting on fenders, wiring, body prep, undercoating, engine, rear, suspension, axle replacement no problem. Welding, cutting or working with internal parts of an engine or trans I have a problem. I’m book smart in some areas but would prefer the comfort of a knowable person for swapping out a cam as an example.

Have a pretty decent tool selection including air tools; don’t have a welder or cutting torch outside of that I pretty much should have everything one would expect. I may take a three week welding class depending on the quality of the shell of the donor car I use for the project.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself give you guys an idea of my abilities, both strengths and weaknesses and your opinion on the difficulty of a project like this. Hard work and time isn’t a factor for me, it’s all fun. Only concern I have is how much I can’t do which means paying someone else to do it, which I want to avoid as much as possible.

I have a lot of questions, I was hoping to run into someone who has experience working on a project like this and this place looks like the place i've been looking for.

Clone Shell Car options:
1970 Dodge Satellite
1970 Road Runner
1970 Belvedere? (Not the right tail lights tho)
1970 GTX

I think the best base choice would be a Satellite, lower cost to purchase, correct tail lights and I’d rather avoid hacking up a Roadrunner out of respect.

Now the super bird front end. I’ve seen the nose in all different forms, fiberglass, steal and aluminum. But I’ve yet to find a complete nose (a kit) with everything I’d need for the conversion, such as the highlight bezels, motors etc. Does such a thing exist and what’s the price?

I just recently discovered this forum but I have created a few posts else where but none could answer my questions or confirm some of my findings. I sent an e-mail to Dayclona two weeks ago asking for a complete nose kit price and what else would be required to make it fit, but I haven’t heard anything back.

Besides the nose, I’ll need 1980 Dodge Coronet front fenders, and a Cornet hood? Is it possible to use an air grabber hood? Then an addition is welded on to the hood? That how it works?

Right now I’m focused on the front end. What do I need, what do I use, How do I do it, what needs modified, what’s the modification for, how’s it work and why. For me the Front end is the hard part. It’s really my only concern; from there I can fly on the auto body and interior work, and the addition of the wing. I don’t plan on the window plug so that won’t be a concern either.

I’m just trying to get my research out of the way and numbers. Once I have that I can start looking for a donor car to get started.

I look forward to hearing from you guys, pretty excited about the upcoming project and the learning experience. I plan to documents the entire thing and make a How to guide that I can donate at the end.

Thanks
-Brad

Welcome. Any of the bodies you list will work. Tail lights can be changed. They just bolt in. Yes, you'll need 70 Coronet fenders and hood, and yes, you could use an N96 or "power bulge" instead of a flat. The extension piece isn't welded on, but I suppose you could do that if you didn't like the seam. I think all the nose pieces are available, but will cost you about as much as the donor car itself.

I'm sure someof these guys that are doing wingthings will chime in. I had a real one once, but haven't seen fit to go back down that road.

enjoy

Awesome story, I read it about a week ago, I was a bit shocked when I saw who replied to my post. Very well written story and I enjoyed reading it. I could relate in a lot of ways with projects I've had in the past.

Well, I haven't been able to find any real numbers, but from what i've found so far, just the front end is going to cost roughly 10K, Add 2-3k for wing and minus the Window plug. That's before the donor shell, engine, trans and all the other misc things needed for the car. It could exceed 30k pretty easy for a project like that, I asked myself how much am I willing to spend and I feel 20k ball park would be more fitting with my budget. You can still make a pretty kick *** car for that amount, just not a superbird.

That’s a bit too rich for my blood. Granted it would be cool and all, but I honestly can’t say the front end is worth THAT much for me. I could be happy with a GTX or Roadrunner clone with the superbird wing on the back however.

This point it’s wait in see for this summer to see what I can find. I’m open to making an Eleanor clone GT-500E as well out of a 67-68 fastback, it’s a bit more appealing since the kit is 5K and needless to say the rest of the parts aren’t at Mopar prices. I've only built Chevys and helped on a few Fords. Never really went the dodge route due to the prices on everything.

I have respect for all three (Chevy, Ford, Dodge) you pretty much have to at this day in age if your in to real cars, i'm 29 and most likely the last generation of our kind. I can't express enough how much I hate ricers.

I haven’t shelved the entire idea of going mopar, like I said when this summer hits it all depends what I find the best deal on. I could go either way.

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions, much appreciated

-Brad

You do know that if you keep calling Roadrunners and Superbirds, "DODGES", someone will eventually correct you....
Oh wait, that would be now.
:))
Welcome Bradolet, we will help you see the light.

Yes, our Mopars cost more to build. But there have always been fewer of them. I think there were more 69 Z-28 Camaros built than ALL the 69 Super Bees. Parts won't be as cheap.

Now don't misunderstand cause I've owned some Vintage Stangs, but I kinda think of them and Camaros like old whores. Everyone's had them. Once I saw "You can't put a price on a good time" on the back of an alcohol Funny, Mopars are the same way.

It will cost you more, but you won't be one of a bunch at every show you go to.

keep looking your best bet is to find a project someone else has started and ran out of money , steam , or for some other reason . Check out this one just bought for 6k

Man that would of been perfect! Plenty left over to stuff a nice 440 in there and manual trans. Looking at that deal, I still can't beleave it went for that much. If you happen across another winged car deal like that let me know!

Hey guys just wanted to give you an update. I finally got the front end!

Here's the pics from my journey I left at 8am and got home around 11pm. From south eastern pa to North western New York on the tip near the lakes. It was one long haul! This front end was made by Ted Janak It was the higher end build $6500 package. http://www.wingedwarriorbodyparts.com/catalog.html Never used, was bought but the project was put on hold and never happened, then he needed money, bad. That's where I come in.

You guys are going to fall out of your chair when I tell you how little I paid for this. I'm not telling until I get better pictures of my inventory for full effect. It was a deal out of this world

In route to New york

No caption needed, just funny

Spent 3 hours cleaning these with soap and water, to clean all the rat "juices" off them as it was stored outside in a barn, box open and the barn had no door. I let everything dry, and then placed each part in its own zip lock bag. Put a lot of time in care of packing everything correctly giving it the respect it deserved.

I was delighted to find extra parts in the box. I took a complete inventory and here’s what is missing

1 marking light holder
Headlight Motors

Now for the Extra parts!

Fender scoops for both fenders!

Outer hood extension!

Valance Fender Corners !

Here’s some pictures of my inventory.

Guy wanted $5500 for this front end 6 months ago, he then dropped down to $4500 5 months ago. I saw the listed 3 months ago for $3500. That's when I contacted him. I beat him down to $2500. He was unable to provide pictures, and it was around this time I priced everything out and felt I should avoid doing this project do to the costs. Which brings us to last week.

He called, needed money bad and asked what I'd pay for the Fender and the compelete Front end kit. I said $1500. He said no way, I'll go as low as $2200. Told him I couldn't do it. Three days pass, On Thursday he calls me up, needs money really bad for a vaction hes taking. Said he'd be willing to part with it all for $1500 but he needs the money fast. Hence why I drove all that way.

So theres all my inventory for $1500! All said in done looking at it i'm sure theres a good $8000 worth of parts there, the front end kit is $6500, add in the fender scoops, Outter hood, and Fender on top that and that's where my guess on total value is coming from. But for me it's priceless! This imo is the HARDEST part of the project. You can find 1970 Plymouths no problem. The wing, also not too bad. But this front end right here has been my bane for a year, I finally have the darn thing! Now I can get started.

I bought a new motorcycle towards the start of the summer (its paid for) that took a nice chunk of my savings from this project, but my old bike needed replaced. I'm looking at around May to buy the car. I could buy one now, but I don't do loans, rather buy everything out right, i'm debt free and I'd like to keep it that way. I dont mind taking extra time to do the project and not kill myself.

I kept biting my tongue. Didn't want to say anything! :p

Also, Bradster, you STOLE that front end! Lucky devil. Good luck on the build! (I'll be keeping my eye out for a build thread.)

Haha, I forgot about that, now I only see and speak Plymouth :) I've come a long way! As for the front end. I put off buying a car until I got one. Being how there's only three company’s out there that make these, none of which I could get in contact with. I e-mailed them three times and if there was a number called a few times and left messages. I was about to give up as I couldn't locate a COMPLETE front end under 7k that was built nice. I was so close in fact that I was going to look at a 1973 Mach 1 that Saturday. He called me back just in time.

To me the hard part on collecting parts is over, this was the biggest step, more so then finding a 1970 Plymouth or even the wing. The front end is just so rare and hard to get and can cost as much as the car! Feels like a big weight has been lifted.

Now to continue to save, and wait for the right 1970 to come along.

Keep me in mind if you change directions and want the stang...

Any suggestions where I could find Headlight motors to open/close the headlight doors?

the original system was vacuum....still the easiest and cheapest to make work, in my opinion. The headlight doors and buckets weigh a lot...it puts a strain on the electric motor if you go that route.

Our clone Daytona is in the link below in my signature, and here is a short vid of the Daytona headlights in action --:> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cejlMddOoWs

Congrats Bradolet! Well I guess we can call you Brymouth or something to that effect! All kidding aside congrats on your purchase you stole those parts. I cant wait to see it come together.

Nice score. We may just have to change your name to Superbrad. (Although, I really liked Bradolet. Damn.)
Keep pics going on your progress.
