I currently have flowmaster 40 mufflers and they drive me crazy on long trips.
The flowmast 40's sound great bombing around town making lots of noise. loud pipes save lives.

Next year I'm going to be making a 6,000 mile trip and I would like a little sanity and radio enjoyment time.

I have been looking at the flowmaster 50 series mufflers that are made for SUV and muscle cars and are clasified as mild instead of agressive.

Anyone running series 50s?

Maybe some sugestions?

I'm thinking about having the muffler dude weld flanges on the mufflers so I can unbolt them and swap when I flip flop.

A number of years ago I saw an episode of Unique Whips where they took one of Jeff Gordons old race cars and made it into a drop top cruiser of sorts. Anyway, they made this deal where through an electric switch system he could go from open headers to silent mufflers with just the flick of a switch. It was the coolest thing. Maybe something like that will solve your problem, but instead of open headers, maybe use small Purple Hornies (since they'd be small enough to fit along side of a regular muffler, in theory).
Guess it depends how "IN" to the project you want to get.

Let me know how much gas you end up spending :)

I know this is off topic but if it helps move this along.....

I have a 6,000+ mile trip planned in the Charger with the wife.
Starting from home in Sacramento CA -> Mount Rushmore -> The Mall of America -> CEMA Car Show in MI -> Michigan International Speedway (NASCAR) -> Chicago to start Route 66 -> Grand Caynon -> Santa Monica Pier California -> Take HWY 1 Home.
Thats the short version.

I really don't want to get into a jerry rigged exhaust system or anything what will get me into any unnecessary conversations with the police on how my Charger is built. (no cut outs)

I'm just looking for a set of mufflers that will not drone me out of the car on long trips.

After doing more research I'm really leaning towards the Flowmaster Super 50 SUV muffles.

I'm also looking into the Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers. Is anyone running these?

I had flowmasters on my cuda and I went with magnaflo on my current car nice sound but quiter than the flowmasters.

I had dynomax Super Turbos on a F150 and they are good mufflers. Fairly quiet at cruise and idle but make a little noise when you are on the throttle. They will be quieter than the super 50/s. For a daily driver the turbos are nice mufflers.

I have cherry bomb turbos on my 318 charger. They have some noise at idle and when you get on it, but they are quite while cruising.

I am using the Flowmaster 50's that you are describing. They are ok, but are louder that I had hoped for. They sound great but the radio thing you mentioned is still a problem. I don't know if it is just an instinct from my younger years but I let off the gas and push in the clutch when I go by a cop in this car.

i have thrush turbos on my cuda which sounds alot like flowmaster, have thrush glasspacks on my challenger with no tailpipes very loud rumble,, still have 4 old round style thrush mufflers nos with the woodpecker on them in boxes which i am going to use 2 of them on my coronet when its finished

I like some noise when I'm getting in the gas but not when I'm just cruising down the road.

Dynomax is also about half the price so these are looking good too.

Thanks "SANDDIESEL" for the sound clips.

I will listen to them when I get home.

You need to use some dynamat in your charger....This stuff does wonders for noise reduction....If you run headers and flows it,s almost a must.....I,m just like you,I like some noise but still want to hear the stereo and noises from my car....It,s expensive, but truly worth it!!!

believe it or not I did put in sound deadner and heat shield before laying down the carpet.

Its just that the mufflers drone right at my cruising speed in 5th gear of 1900-2000 rpm and 70 mph and in 4th gear doing 55 and 2450-2500. I cant win.

Looking at the flowmaster documentation they state

The 40 series (aggressive) will generally resonate or “drone” inside the vehicle, around 1800-2000 rpm and again, around 2400-2600 rpm.

After a bunch more research and reading review I think I have decided on the Dynomax Performance 17734 - Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers.

The price is good compared to the others too.

My Dad always said that you'd think you kids would want the quietest dirtbike made so you could ride the powerlines without attracting any attention and so no one would call the cops.........

always wanted a loud pipe on my dirt bike,,,only removed the baffels,,,in those days

I'm a Flowmaster 40 guy myself.
I look at it this way:
I spent ALOT of money on my motor....and I want to hear it.
If I wanted quiet, I'd buy a 2010 Challenger and drive that on my 6,000 mile trip.

Here is MY idea of what my B-Body car should sound like:
