I'm trying to get an idea of what backspace or ET it takes to get a 315-335 tire onto the back of a 68-70 B-body...

Can't find much info out there. I've seen 325/50-15's on the back, so I know it can be done.

This won't help you much but I run 325/50-15s on my 62' - but it is tubbed with relocated springs. I actually have a good 2 " to the front to spare and some to the rear. The car was set up to have room for 28x14.50x15 slicks..

I don't know if ALL 68-70 B body cars used the same wheelhouse, but on the Chargers, the tub isn't flush with the quarter panels. It sits INboard a few inches, preventing you from running tires flush to the body....UNLESS the car is raised up from stock. I like to turn corners, so my car is lowered. I have 18x10 rims that measure 11 1/2" wide on the outside edge. I'm thinking of cutting and modifying the tubs to allow me to push the rims and tires out to within 3/4" of the edge. I think it looks better and may help the handling by providing more stability.

The picture above needs explaining. Its NOT as simple as it looks!
In 2000 I bought an 8 3/4" axle for this car to replace the original 8 1/4". Yes, the car was originally a 318 powered "500" model.
Anyhow, I pulled an 8 3/4" axle from a 67 Belvedere wagon. I thought that all 62-70 housings were the same width. I later found out that the 66-67 units were a little narrower than the 68-70. The axle in the picture is the 67 unit and the wheels have 4 3/4" of backspacing. Later I added XHD leaf springs and lowered the car 1 1/2" and had interference with the outer wheel tubs. I had another axle cut down to be 1 1/2" NARROWER than a 66-67 housing. Once I modify the wheel tubs, I'm planning on installing a 68-70 housing to push the wheels out to the edge.

On my 69 Coronet I have 18 x 9.5 with 5.5 " back space. The widest tires that will fit are 295 40's. My outer wheel house has been modified or cut so there is the same space on the wheel opening as the top of the wheel house. 12 .5" tires will fit in there , but you would need a panard bar to keep the tires from hitting the leaf spring or wheel house. I went with 11.5" and am running hotchkis road race springs with billet 1" lowering blocks. this lowers the rear by way more than the advertised by hotchkis 1" lower. I am more like 3 to 4 " lower with the blocks. But to answer you question... stock rear end width, you should be somewhere around 5" back space to get the widest wheel that will fit centered up.....

I have heard that the Coronet platform has more room than the Road Runner platform as far as room for tires in the rear. I have a 69 Superbee A12 and plan to run a 15x10 steel wheel with a 5"backspace. Haven't found the right tire yet.

i have 15x10 5" BS centreline drag lites with 295 50 15 bf goodrich t/a car is lowered 1" and that is the biggest that will fit in my 68 charger as when the tyre is right up in guard it slightly ribs on inside wheel well and is about 2mm off outer guard, so i think some modification was done to the car you saw with 325", maybe if car was lifted a bit it might work but like someone else said the B body wheel well tapers

Gregory C....what kind of tires are those?

Sorry that it took so long to respond. A PM may have served you better!
My tires are Nitto 555. Front tires are a 275-40-18 and the rears are a 295-45-18.

Not to state the obvious but, why don't people use a guard roller to push out the inner wheel well lump? I was plaining on doing this to clearance the edge of my tyres once I put the wheels on my coronet, so please speak up if I'm going to damage something doing this...

Import owners to it all the time on modern imports to clearance bigger wheels and lowered ride hight. Here's a pic:

I would only use that during the mock up stage cause you will need to heat the paint to keep it from cracking. Other than that, do it to it!!

That's what I wanted to hear! The plan is for it to go in for paint in the next couple of months, so I'll roll the inner lump out before I drop it off at the painters. I don't think I'll need the extra clearance with the rims I have but it would be nice to not have the worry about scrubbing and also the option down the road to either space out the current wheels or get new rears with less backspacing.

BTW Spot on with the heat, you use a heat gun to warm the metal / paint in the area when you lip the wheel wheel and pump the guard out. Works pretty good usually!

my 74 charger i had mickey t streets 32x15 x16.5 and magnum 10' wheel with4.75 back spacing car was mini tubed and lowered 2 '". no lip roll but you want to corner?
