Was just wondering if anyone here has had it done and were they happy with it?

I don't have any plans for my car in the near future but have been toying with the idea of painting it a nice dark metallic blue or dark metallic purple and having all the chrome (bumpers, trim, grill, hubcaps) chrome plated black. Never seen it in person and seldom hear about it on the interweb.

(Can't find any pictures of real black chrome bumpers)

Apparently it's done the same way as regular chrome plating and not some cheap paint or other method.

haha, Can a mod please c

I'm actually thinking of doing the same thing but I can't deside yet. I saw black chrome exhaust tips at our local O'rileys and I like black chrome a lot! But I don't know how well it holds up....

Find yourself a good Powder coating shop. I do powder coating at my brothers shop and we can do the black chrome. It goes over the chrome rim and is translucent so the chrome shines through. google search images for black chrome powder coating and there a ton of pics.

Thanks

Thanks that's a great idea, to powder coat with a translucent coating like a "black pearl" maybe... I didn't ever think of that, I'm thinking about doing my current rims bumpers also...

I found a Dupli Color Black Shadow that you spray on your chrome to make it black chrome

I've tried that

The problem with the translucent paint is it's soft & scratches way too easy, that's why the Powder Coating sounds so good, it's way tougher than paint & I'm sure it's way cheaper than real Black chrome...

Yes;black chrome is pricey, but wa-a-a-ay cool. Back in my bikin' days,I saw a number of cats with black chrome pieces on their scoots. Not too many places around that DO IT RIGHT!!! Brown's Plating(Florida?) and Graves Plating(somewhere else down South) were both known for quality B-C plating, but that was years ago. Not sure if they're even around anymore. Can you get the "translucent" look of B-C plating with powdercoating?

Ive tried different kinds of so called black chrome powdercoat, even on chrome it does not look even close to the real black chrome. More like dark silver in my opinion. So far there isnt a powdercoat that looks right, but then again Im picky.

Just for reference, powder coating runs around $160 for a set of motorcycle rims. To have the same rims black chromed at a chrome shop would run around $650 for the pair. Depends on your taste and budget.

don't waste your time or $$$$

if you want to make black chrome wall art, use the spray bomb.

if you actually want to use it, powder coating is the way to go. :icon_viking:

Those wheels, Iceburg and spectrum.. There cool, never heard of these. Thanks!

Yep I've been there, it's a cheap temporary fix at best, Real Black Chrome is nice, but pricey & quality Powder coating isn't much cheaper either, been that route too...
