hi guys, as you know i am in the middle of restoring my Savoy; the k-member was never pulled; i got it out a while back and instead of it being satin-black, it was satin-grey. And it had NEVER been removed, so it was the color that was put on in the factory.
Anyone familiar with this? I can post pics tomorrow if you like.

thanks, Marcel

62's were grey. Not sure of the exact reason. I haven't heard or seen the 63-65s being grey but with all the wacky variances they did back then it seems like almost anything is possible.

The later replacement frames seem to be gray.

I've never seen gray on a 62. Have 3 right now & had 3 others. All were black that I had. Is the car in question an export car?

Nope; i bought it in Louisville, Kentucky a few years ago.
Slant-6, 3-on-the-tree, radiodelete car. Nothing special.

My 63 was (is) black. I powdercoated it gloss black but I'm sure it was black when I pulled it.

Notice the K-member in moparmarks pics? It has a skid plate AND a sway bar.
What application was that K-member on?

I stumbled on this thread by accident, I am intrigued because my '66 Coronet 440 convertible has a grey colored K-member. I thought that maybe my Dad had painted it 30+ years ago. I'd ask him but he died in '09. Was your '63 built in LA?

i dont have any pics of it but my 65 coronets k frame was also gray and it had never been altered in any way was all original when i got it but when i did my engine swap i painted it black.

My car was sold by:
Bales Motor Co Inc
7th and Spring Streets,
Jeffersonville, Indiana

My MW car came with the grey K-frame! The skid plate was normally on the hemi & 440 6pak cars 66-71!

I have to wonder if they are just 50 year old faded satin black. Haven't you ever seen the chalk weathering turning paint white. It would be more pronounced on black. Try to get the paint wet, and see if it turns black or not? I have never seen anything else but a black crossmember.:eusa_think:

The 70-2 six pack cars had them (as well as the U-codes). 1969 A12 cars didn't use the skid plate k-member, since they shared the same 5qt "402" oilpan as the 383 engines. In '70, the U and V-code cars came with the same 6qt pan as the hemi and that is what made the skid plate a neccesary item.
