My dad is putting together a stroked 440 (505) and has a question on the shims for the rocker shaft/rockers. They fit over the shaft and we dont know where to use them. We know the big spacer goes between the rocker arms but the shims have stopped the build for the day. If you have pics that would help.

So no one knows what the shims on the rocker shaft are for? Looks like I'll be doing more diggin' on the net.

Which rocker system are you using? The thinner spacers are used to center the rockers over the valve tip and to keep the rocker from riding directly against the holddown clamp..

I tried to post some pictures but it's not letting me. Anyway, mine came with a few different thicknesses and i set up each rocker individually to get it centered on the valve stem and get the end play nearest zero i could, without interference.

Thanks fella's, you guys confirmed what I found.

Are you taliking about the shims that go underneath the rocker shafts between the shafts and the pedestals? Those are used to raise the entire rocker shaft assembly to correct for valve train geometry problems. Centers the rocker arm over the valve tip in forward/aft position as opposed to the spacers between the rocker arms, which center them in the side-to-side position.

This is the only pic I have of my rocker shafts on my 440 based 493. These are Hughes rocker arms and shafts. The spacers are all from Hughes also. Ron

I'm talking about the round shims that fit around the rocker shaft.

thin-L-ring-R-wide-L-ring-R-thin-L-ring-R-wide-L-ring-R-thin

thin = thin spacer
wide = wide spacer and long bolt
R = right rocker arm
L = left rocker arm
ring = circular rings
