removing torsion bars

trying to take out my torsion bars on a 69 RR.I am trying to loosen the adjusting bolts on the LCA. I still have about 2 inches of bolt left to go and it will not go any further.Is it because of all the crud built up thru the years or does it stop at a certain point? I do have the torsion bar removal tool from mancini racing.Any ideas to get the bolt to go further.This is the first time i.ve had to tackle anything like this.
 
its because of crud.saturate in a good penatrating oil,i use pb blaster.bolt just needs to have play to remove tortion bar.
 
i did spray some on there before i started,maybe have to spray some more ane let it soek in over nite.How far down to i loosen the bolts?Do i go down till they are almost out?
 
Any penatrant will work. What you'll need to do is keep running the bolt in and back out. It will go a little further each time, cleaning up the threads as you go. When it starts binding up, you can muscle it some but not too much. With enough leverage you can break it. It is a time consuming process, and if you have an air wrench it makes thing go quicker. Stay with it and it will come out. I had to do this with both of mine.
 
yea, i may have to work it back in a little and maybe see if i can get a little brush or something to clean the threads a bit.
 
i hope you got that thing on jack stands on the frame with the front wheels hanging!
 
yes i do and the engine is out of it,along with the floor pans.Trying to take the bars off so i can put in a new cross member.
 
Hey Roger...Like these guys said, soak it in penetrating oil. If that don't work, heat the living heck out of the bolt and threaded arm with a propane/map torch.

thanks for all the info,will try it when i get back home.On the road now till the first of march.
 
got 1 torsion bar out and trying to get the drivers side out now,having trouble.I've sprayed pb blaster,wd-40 took a little wire brush inside the crossmember and hammered on the removal tool and the bar doesn't budge.is there anything else i can try to get the bar to move to get it out?
 
do you have an air chisel?..if you do....get a piece of scrap metal. put the scrap metal on the lower control arm and the air chisel to the scrap metal. try to vibrate it loose. its possible that old grease and grime has glued it into the socket inside. i would NOT suggest putting the air chisel directly to the torsion bar AT ALL !

TRY THE AIR CHISEL ON THE TORSION BAR TOOL USING SOME KIND OF PROTECTION.

only ideas...do it at your discretion . these can be a bitch, or fall out....mine fell out and i was amazed they did!
 
thanks but don't have an air chisel just a BFH and old fashioned muscle.It looks like it is coming out of the control arm but there doesn't seem to be any movement at the crossmember.Since the crossmember is toast anyway,can i take a BFH and beat on the member to loosen up anything there?
 
If you are replacing the torsion bar cross member anyway, drill out your spotwelds and take a sawzall to the cross member. Cut out the torsion bar holder and remover the bar from the LCA. Did you try the heat like Prop suggested? Good luck........
 
no i didn't use any heat,i think that suggestion was for the adjusting bolt,but those are loosened all the way now.I might cut out the crossmember as a last resort if it comes down to that.
 
Did you remove the clips at the back of the torsion bars to allow them to come out the back of the cross member?
 
Removing the upper control arm bump stops lets the suspension drop a little more plus loosen the nut on the lower control arm pivot.The bar will come out alot easier.
 
There's an other way to get torsion bars out. Remove the lower control arm pivot nut and brake strut nut. You can then pry the lower control arm with the torsion bar bakwards. This is of course after you have confirmed there is no tension on the torsion bar. You may want to separate the lower ball joint too. Once the back side of the torsion bar is loose, you can then work on getting it out of the lca pivot. Usually hammering it with you holding the bar in the other hand will work.

to be honest, there was no clips in the crossmember,they pretty much rusted to pieces.
 
thanks for all the replies,i will have all day sunday to work on it if my shoulder holds out that long.I know there is no tension on the bars,the adjusting bolt is as loose as i can get it.I think that maybe there is just that much rust in the crossmember that i have to deal with but will see what happens.
