80 Grit!

Please Please don't leave it in primer and drive it! Most primers 'breath' which means you may as well leave it in bear metal and drive it because it will rust up nearly as quick.

If you have to, even a coat of rattle can paint just to seal the metal against the elements.

I'm all for doing it the way you can afford but there'd be nothing worse then having it come back and bite you later

To be honest, I was going to stitch up the split appearing on the rear quarter / b pillar (pillarless) corner, cover up any exposed metal with a quick coat of rattle can paint, drop in an engine and enjoy mine until I could afford a repaint. But I've had a touch of luck and a mate who restores cars has offered to paint it for a really good price. So I'm selling whatever I don't need and saving my arse of for a new lick of shine:hello2:

Good advice Malicious. We got it covered. It's going to get a coat of inexpensive primer, then a light sanding to see how it looks (check the bodywork) followed by a coat of good primer and then sealer.

Then it's coming home for suspension and some engine compartment work - fix or replace the factory A/C compressor, straighten out the vacuum advance and factory air cleaner and a few other odds and ends.

Then back for final blocking, sanding and paint.

Then home for some interior work, 15" wheels (thinking black cop wheels), a cool hidden stereo system (factory AM 8-track stays in place) and maybe a custom gauge panel cause I'm an engine geek and need about 15 gauges to feel comfortable...

Then I don't know what I'm gonna do. I hope I don't get to the end too soon. :eusa_think:

I've had several Mopars apart for a total rebuild and someone seems to always come by and offer stoooopid money for them so I've never completed one. The last car was a 70 340 Challenger Rally Package with 15x7's, factory rear window louvers, luggage rack and the list goes on. I had just started going back together and had the body work nearly complete. The car was rust free but was 'whiskey dented' all over! One of the several that shouldn't have let get away. The last old Mopar I have is my 66 Belvedere 2dr post that's been apart for way too long but doubt anyone is going to make an offer that I can't refuse lol. It's also rust free with nearly no body damage. I just need to quit working on other people's junk and get to work on mine!

Sounds too familiar!!

Sounds like you have it under control mate! Good luck!

I razor bladed mine....the paint came off in sheets!! I started with 80 and went to 36 grit and thought this is for the birds. The thing has several layers and a buddy mentioned to try a razor blade stripper and it worked! He just said it to be funny not thinking that I would actually try it AND it working lol

That's an indication that the primer-surfacer that was used was lacquer... nothing adhered to it!

Good luck getting that lacquer based stuff off with no media blast! A shop near by that I used to deal with was always trying to cut corners, and guess what they always cut? Yup, the media blast phase! Well, long story short, after their customer bitched to this shop about how shitty the paint job was, the owner sent to me the hood, I was blasting sheets of paint off, I swear, like the size of a large Pizza pie! This shop then went to blame the paint manufacturer DuPont for making crappy paint; can you believe that? No owning up and making it right for the customer, all to save 2 grand, which would have been the best 2 grand ever spent if they did it right the fist time around. I tell you all this and get the answer that its too expensive, etc, well, trust me, I've seen horror stories like the brief mention above on trying to cut costs and corners. Good luck!

Update

Here's the latest. Plenty of photos. Take a look at the damage on the right quarter panel. That was the only serious rust spot on the car other than the holes below the rear window. I know not everyone's gonna love the work we're doing, but it's a friend helping me and to watch it is nothing short of miraculous. Bodywork is a real art form...

The right rocker panel was smashed in - like the last guy drove over a curb and just rode down the rocker to the street. The picture really doesn't show how bad it was. He worked on it for 8 hours with a puller and a hammer. I swear there's more filler in the puller-holes than there is in the dent! Like I said - pure artwork...

Its about that price, for all the car, including doors, hood, deck lid, etc. blast the entire car, inside, outside and underneath. That's actually too cheap, I should charge close to 3 grand for the job I do. Best money you'll ever spend, or anyone will ever spend. Get it far cleaner than any other process sans dipping. But, I get it it; budgets etc. So, have fun and enjoy what you're doing!

Your car looks great! Hope it all turns out the way you want it, really looks like its in good shape.. love the 70, but i like-em-all :) Good luck with it..

She's Back...

Back from the painter with the bodywork and primer complete. This is my chance to get the rest of the major mechanical stuff done before I have to worry about scratching all the fancy new paint.

And with a new-used set of Budnick "Famosa Dished" wheels - a lucky internet find. For guys with tire fit questions, those are 15x7 225/60/15 with 3.5" of backspacing on the front, and 15x10 275/60/15 with 5" of backspacing on the rear. It's 10.25 inches from ground to bottom of the weld seam just in front of the rear wheel, and 8.675" for same measurement right behind the front wheel. We call that the California Rake. LOL

The fronts fit perfectly. The rears are just a little tight, but fortunately my car "came with" (or came to me with at least) the inner skirts on the rear quarters neatly folded up in to the fender well. Also my 40+ year old rear leaf springs are pretty much shot, so I'll probably get another inch or so of height in the rear when I get some fresh ones on there.

Startin' to look like a muscle car!

Ev2

Looks great. What color will it be ?

The car is a numbers matching 383 column shift auto; factory A/C; Los Angeles Plant car in EV2 - Tor Red (Hemi Orange). It's not a hugely valuable combination of parts as Roadrunners go, but since it IS a "classic" Hemi Orange car, I'm going to put it back to that color. I'm going to add the hood stripe and Go Wing that were factory options even though they were not on the car from the factory. I'm not THAT much of a purist...
