just looking for a little guidance. I have a 72 Charger we will be painting. It will include doing the trunk area, full body, door jams and under hood area. I really don't have anything to go by, and dont want to estimate low and run out. My thought was to get two gallons, mix them for an even color, then have at it. Will / should two be enough for an inexperienced painter??

thanks for any input

Matt

I think it depends on the paint type. With PPG 2 gals of color will give you 4 sprayable gals once reduced. If using something like the Omni brand then yes get 2 gals

I would want to have a gallon and a half of sprayable paint to make sure you get good coverage and some left over for future touch ups would be my thought.. but I could be wrong..LOL

all good points..thanks. My plan is to paint is sub lime...was thinking of a white or grey sealer. My original guess was to get two spray-able gallons of paint.

As long as you stay with the top end line of paint you should be okay. Stay away from the cheap colors, they're cheaper for a reason. You can get some sealers tinted which would help with coverage. I just can't remember which brands. Good luck!

Thanks, Anyone have a recommendation on a moderate priced, good quality paint. I was thinking of using a single stage Acrylic Urethane. This is not a showcar...will be my sons daily driver...but would like it to hold up and protect the car.

I used Dupont Centari on my 63. Good coverage and not too bad wetsanding and buffing.

if there is a local automotive paint supply store near you that you can talk to,tell them what you want to do for your car and ask them their recommendations. They should be able to tell you how much color you will need with the reducer/hardener. They should also tell you how much clear you would need if you go that way also. I know the local guy near me is helping me get the right amount of paint and supplies, and he's not trying to reach into my wallet.

I used the Eastwood Malibu Sunset on a Comache I have, and while it's a great looking color, it's a little weak on coverage and thin before you mix it. The Malibu Sunset is almost a candy color, and I got a lot of clouding when I was shooting it. If I was going to paint anything else with the Eastwood stuff, I'd be sure to get at least 3 gallons of it as they sell it. I still like it, it was just hard to shoot. Hasn't been on long enough to give you a feedback on durability, but the price was sure right.

paint quality

I'll apologize for my opinion beforehand.

With all of the labor you are going to put into a paint job, I believe you can only save a little money on "cheaper" paints. PPG makes a really nice single stage product that covers good and looks great. Material costs are rediculous, but your labor is worth alot! The better quality material applies easier and looks better longer than the cheaper paints. I'm putting Spies Hecker on my ride because of all of the labor i'm putting into it. The basecoat/clearcoat i'm using costs alot, but the paint is high quality and the clear blocks the U.V. so the color stays put. Whatever you use, make sure it's a brand name product, and you won't be sorry. Paint packaged by someone who doesn't have a paint factory probably isn't as good as a main-line company. You get what you pay for unfortunately. I used to shoot Centari back in 1972 and it was a good single stage product, but that was then. Do your homework and you'll be O.K. Good luck, and post some pic's after it's done. We wanna see it!

Just like you said thats why I used Centari, I've sprayed it before and my paint store carries it. Now If I was going to spray a daily driver I would use a base/ clear. This would be less than $400 more and you don't have to worry about UV fade. In the end do what you want and budget is all part of it. Good luck!

You save more than just a little.More like half as much.Recently got 2 price quotes withe exact same material list PPG $1700,Omni $800.

right...I have gotten high and low quotes. This being a daily driver and my sons first car....I'm trying to balance out quality vs $$. I don't doubt the high dollar stuff is great...and might even be worth the $$....and if this was a full blown resto...I'd probably be up for it...but its not. Just looking for some good recommendations on some decent quality paint

You could order a quart of the Eastwood paint and spray a test panel and see how you like it, especially if you are trying to save some cash.

If you're looking for single-stage urethane, that's not too expensive, check into Dupont Chroma-One... I used it a few years ago on a couple of cars. I'd only use Centauri if it was for a strict original car.... I used that stuff years & years ago... I would not use anything other than a urethane nowadays.

Thanks for everyones input. I ended up going with Nason BC/CC. Got the engine compartment and underside of the deck lid painted today.
