in my 63 440 i have a slightly built 69 440 rebuilt stock trans, and 275/60 15 rear tires, looking for what size gear to use.. for a street/strip and what for a 1/4 mile and would it be better to use a 15'' slick or a stock 14 type slick for the 1/4 mile

Maybe 3.91's?

Yeah, gearing really depends on the intended usage. 3.91s are a great street/strip gear as long as you're not doing a lot of freeway driving. Probably the best compromise for all around use. As far as slicks go, you really need 15" wheels. There are practically no choices in tire sizes in 14" from the major manufacturers.

thanks for the info..mostly street driven, but live 15 min from a local 1/4 strip so i could do both....

You lucky ba****d!!!!!!!

I was talking more along the lines of weight, trans type, converter stall, engine specs....it all adds up.

Should be plenty of info for a STREET driven car. I'd even question the need for full slicks with the array of great, sticky DOT tires available today.

I guess it all depends on how close an answer he wants. I like giving people the best possible answer. I read his post. I don't need underlines to see that cam specs, compression, intake and exhaust and vehicle weight specifics are not there. All of this has a bearing on final drive ratio. That's why I asked for more specifics. Any recommendation given based on such a vague description is subject to be off base. When I give someone advice, I like it to be as accurate as possible. So I ask for as much information as possible.

Go with a 4.11 in a Dana sure grip.
That get the front wheels off the ground.

No kidding! The closest track to my place is 60 miles away across an international border in B.C. If I was 15 minutes away from a decent track I would go at least 3.91s. Maybe even 4.11s and just not ever drive on the freeway.

here is alittle more info.. 3600 weight 30 over, stock 68 heads, 509 cam, holley 760 slightly larger jets front and rear, stock rebuilt pushbutton trans thanks for any help

The .509 cam is pretty aggressive and will tend to want a lot of gear. I say 4.10 min for dual purpose and 4.30 or deeper for optimum 1/4 mile performance. Use a 15" rim for the slicks and go with either the short 8.5 x 26 or the 9 x 28. I'm running 9 x 28 and go through the lights at 6200 with 4.30's. For my motor that's too much gear and will be better off with 4.10's or maybe 3.91.

for what its worth....my 72 charger that weighed in at 3680 ....when I was running the .509 I was running a 4.30 gear with 28x10 tires 3500 stall 60ft times were 1.8 and going through the traps at 108 @ 12.5....rpm was rite around 6100..

you'd be surprised at how much gear you don't need. the fly in the ointment is the .509 cam. i'd probably do a 3.91 with 28" tall tires for a street/strip combo. the stock heads and small carb will hold the top end back some.

THIS ^^^^^^

The 509 cam has 248.5* @.050. That's a BIG hydraulic camshaft. It should have at the bare minimum a 3K converter......3500 would be better with the gears described above. As usual, Meepomous is right on the money.
