Tried this on A bodyies but seems no one will chime in.Thinking about getting a 68 dart. I have a photo and wondered if someone wiser than myself could tell me why the inside of the quarter panels (Inside trunk) Are textured to a point like it was taped off and then smooth after that. Is this an indication of repair??

Not really but it's hard to tell just from a pic. There are other things that I would look at like seams and hammer/dolly work. Do the seams look original? What about under the floor? Does it look like work has been done near the quarter panel?

I am trying to determine if the car looks worthy of a 4 hour ride to go see it.

I wouldn't think so, necessarily. Somebody mightta just been soundproofin.....or maybe even treatin some surface rust. It mightta been for a good purpose. Hell, the 65 COronet I just bought has factory coating like that on the insides of both quarters.....I know cause there's factory color original paint on top of it. Lots of cars had that stuff on the insides of the quarters.

If you look at pix online of the trunks of these cars, many of them, even the pristine show winners, will show that rough texture - this was pretty much a standard Mopar "feature." I've always guessed it was to keep trunk contents from scratching the paint from the inside and creating rust seeds... any Chrysler line guys here to confirm that?

My GTX has a tape line where the inside of the quarters had been undercoated inside the trunk. It was an original paint car when i bought it.

Looks good to me. So what if it's had quarters done. Means it was done right.
If it straight and black is a bitch because it hides nothing!!!0

You are looking at undercoating applied during the assembly of the car. It was actually sprayed on with an airless sprayer which gives the perfect right angled edges. Also if you look, the undercoating actually goes foward far enough beyond the wheel well that it is clear it was applied to the quarter before it was welded on. It was used for sound proofing, those quarters, even on the A bodies were pretty big and probably had some percussion characteristics w/o the undercoating. It was also painted over body color.

My 70 Bee has a very similar coating. It looks to have been tapped off to, but its original.

I reapplied that coating on inside of the quarters on my 68 RR after the car was chemicaly stripped. I know it was there originally as I'm the first to disassemble the car. It looks correct to me on that Dart.

If they did any kind of quarter work on that car they sure did a good job, but it doesn't look like it and i would have to drive 4 hrs to see that one! Thats one beautiful car..
