On my 67, 318 Coronet there a leaking soft plug on the front of the engine behind the power steering pump. Looks like lots of disasembly to get at it and replace it. Anyone done this recently? Hell, I didnt even know there was a freeze plug in the front. Thanks, Dave

yeah there is a freeze plug on both ends of the heads. be glad it's not the rear one. gotta pull the steering pump to get at it.

It will most likely be rusty, and could be a challange to get out, but hopefully not. Once you do, the plug is a 1 1/4" and you can use a 13/16" deep socket to put it back in.

Dorman products are popular, so their number is #555-023. clean the hole well using sandpaper to remove any accumulated residue and rust, then use a non-hardening sealer on the head and plug edge. Hammer it in until the edge of the cup lip is even with the chamfer in the head, and you done.

If you can't get a good swing with a hammer in that spot, those rubber plugs with a expander nut that you tighten in place work well.

and you might want to consider that if one is leaking, there might be more on the future. If you've any plans to pull the engine for repain, regasket, etc, be a good time to change them all. I've changed ones behind the motor mounts on a '69 road runner/383. PIA but can be done, except for the ones on the rear of the heads.

Yeah, Ive decided pulling the engine and changing all of them is what Im gonna do. Will do as soon I can round up someone to help me take the hood off.

Does anyone know what size the freeze plug is on the front passenger side of the 318 engine that is right behind the fuel pump. It appears maybe to be 1 3/8". Thanks, Dave

I do think I will now put off pulling the engine and changing all of them. The rest of them, even on the rear of the block appear to be brass.

Cool. I was worryin about that myself. Make sure you go back either stainless or brass and you won't be doin that again.

Bought this freeze plug driver from Mac about 40 years ago haven't worn it out yet.Just unscrew the driver from the head match it up to the freeze plug diameter and pound away does some steep angles.
