I am seriously about to sell this car and buy a god damn chevy this thing is so irritating its not even funny, one thing after another...
Went to adjust my shifting mechanism the other day and tighten it up, I noticed that my a833 shifted over about an inch to the drivers side. undid the tranny mount to put it back in place, (takes a considerable amount of effort to get it back to where it should be with a pry bar then springs back into the wrong position as soon as I let off of it with the pry bar. so I took a tranny jack threw it under the k frame and loosened up all of the k frame bolts. the tranny moved itself back over to the correct position how ever when I used a floor jack and 2x4 to move the tranny upto fit the mount back into play it shifts over to the drivers side again. not the tranny mount wont line up worth a **** with the tranny unless I pry it in place and wedge a screw driver between the tranny and the tunnel and even then it seems as if the tranny is set about a quarter of an inch too far back so I cant get the bolts in it unless I come in from an angle and I really dont want to strip the tranny. Yet again any help is appreciated as I am extremely close to either selling it and buying a chevy or a ford or putting an auto in it. Thanks

Well, not sure i completely understand, but if the tail shaft will not line up with the mount then I would look at the motor mounts. the trans is bolted to the bellhousing which is bolted to the engine. If the trans is off, then so is the engine.

Motor mounts bolted in correctly? I.E. driver side and passenger side both on the same side as the block lugs?

Ya, probably need to loosen the motor mounts to aline.
I've owned around 30 Chevys and 20 Fords and have worked on a gazillion more. Believe me, they have their problems too.

shouldnt move if its bolted to the engine and the crossmember some pics or better explanation would help us

Do you want the pics from up top or underneath? yes the trans is bolted to the bell housing and the bell is bolted to the motor, that's why I loosened up the k frame to see if I could get it lined back up ( I thought maybe it got tweaked from driving it around.) I put a new clutch in it about 1000 miles ago and everything went back together mint. The motor mounts looked ok but ill grab some pics when I hdad back to the shop. At the same time I noticed this it has been grinding going into reverse, wont go into first sometimes unless I take off in 3rd for a few feet. Idk if having the tranny crooked for an inch messed it up or what, also when I did the clutch the guy who had it before me never put a pilot bearing in ( I thought for sure that cause the shaking in my shifter in 4th gear, I put one of the needle bearing ones in and it didn't fix it. But since the tranny started having problems it shakes extremely bad and it is completely rpm related not speed

*shifter shakes in every gear now

from underneath would be great. probably kind of tough to get a decent shot from the top but if you can that would be good too.

Dude - Chevys and Fords aren't any better... They make motor mounts for mustang with 3 axis of adjustability for a reason...

coule it be possible your car was ever in an accident? K frame bushings shot so it shifted?

Is it possible the bolts werent torqued properly and loosened up on ya? Seems like quite a coincedence.

Yeah I know they all have their problems I love my car im just mad at the moment, its a possibility I know something similar happened to my dads about 15 years ago hejust drove it around until we replaced the 400 with a 500 wedge, an 18 spline tranny,a nd a new rear end. I just don't have the money to do all of that lol

Moving on to other brands won't solve your problem. Honing your diagnostic skills will. You should inspect the front motor mounts. I bet one is loose or broken.

I'm with you RustyRatRod--I've seen this same problem with two other cars (my '58 Impala and my friend's '87 Porsche)--both had a broken motor mount.

Which bolts?

I'm just going back to your clutch replacement 1000 miles ago. Seems possible to me that anything you touched 1000 miles ago may have loosened and might be causing the problem if they werent torqued properly.

I had a similar issue in an old CJ turned out it was a bad trans mount. that trans mount was totally destroyed and the jeep would vibrate like hell. The heavy vibations actually loosened the bell housing bolts on me and made the thing undrivable.

The trans mount was definitely bad when I took it apart yesterday, but im gonna check my motor mounts tomorrow thank you!

Shoot us some pic's of Both mounts where they bolt to the block and both where they bolt to the k.
Also shoot a few of the trans mount area front and back side.

Take your time.!

Step back breath and think it out i found that when i have a problem i need to walk away and gather myself. Then go back and take your time look it all over very well and be patient.! it will work out.!

OK, offhand chance, but something to check. Make sure the block dowels for the bellhousing are in place and just check the bellhousing itself for cracks. (I've seen it).
