i have a 70 bone stock super bee, i am converting to electronic ignition...my question is what electronic box should i use? I have heard horror stories about orange and chrome boxes going bad prematurely, and the stock replacement units at parts stores have too low of a RPM capability? I want something that will last, but dont want to sacrafice power? any brand suggestions or ideas? thanks

Mopar Muscle just did a comparo of a generic parts store box vs. Mopar Orange vs. Mopar Chrome vs. the new Rev-n-ator. I've only had one orange box go bad on me and that was because a so-called authorized mechanic on the New York Turnpike bypassed the ballast resistor. The Rev-n-ator has a built in rev. limiter and had the best horsepower and torque. http://www.thertgarage.com/products.html I met the guy making them at Carlisle and was impressed.

I've had orange boxes that lasted a long time and then had ones that failed after a short time, In my case I think it was excessive heat from bad wiring, too much resistance, too much heat, I fried so many regulators, a starter and a few alternators back in the day. Google f b o or 4 seconds flat he has some boxes with an external rev limiter thats supposed to be bullit proof up till 7000 rpm's.

He also has stock looking regulators that look exactly like mechanicals but they have electronic insides

Hey Greg, that box does look impressive, what was Mopar Muscles verdict?

One point of interest. The MP units (save for the Super Gold unit, unless it's been redesigned) all have a high RPM timing retard feature. This is a good feature that I am unaware whether the competitors boxes have. It helps not melt things at high RPM. You know, like pistons and whatnot? The extra timing retard is also good for a few high RPM horse power. I know first hand the old Standard Ignition LX101 box does NOT retard timing. I will agree that Mopar has had their quality control issues, but those boxes are better designs than most people realize.

btw, the orange boxes are good to 6K, chrome boxes to 8K and gold ones 12K plus.

I have the orange box and researched it before using. It is important TO USE A 1.0 BALAST RESISTOR WITH THIS SET UP. Many people do not and run into problems.

In short, more power and smoother curve. On a stroker small block the Mopar orange box averaged 499 ft/lbs and 473 hp, the chrome box made 504 and 478, and the Rev-n-ator made 514 and 487. The said it didn't retard the timing at 4k rpm like the factory boxes. BTW the parts store cheapie made 489 and 463.

horses and torque are all close, the top hp/torque rating looks good on paper, but for my two cents I go for the one with the smoothest, most efficent timing to rpm curve, the one tahats most efficent

Well....they might da sheeot and all.....but no way could I have anything with REV N ATOR on it under my hood. I'd have to paint over it. It aint the most heterosexual soundin name in the world.

Trash the silly little ECU boxes and your ballast resistor for good and put an MSD 6AL under the battery.
