Hey guys, I have a 1966 Charger with a 440 in it. I have hooker long tube headers, the biggest racing rad i could find. 3 slim fans running on it...and still I overheat. It has a serpentine belt set up on her as well. I've tried going to a smaller water pump pulley to no avail.
I'm wondering if its possible to fit the hood a a Coronet on it. That way I would have a vented hood and might be just enough. Any other tips?
Thanks in advance.

More clues would help. When does it overheat? Sitting still? Runnin down the road? How hot is hot? What CFM are the fans total? You need around 4K CFM to cool a high performance street engine.

Pictures of your setup will also help greatly.

Are you running a anti-colapse spring in the lower rad hose?
What Thermostat are you running?
Is it a AC car?
Does it run hot or is it actually boiling over?

At this point we are going to ask more questions than provide answers so please bare with us.

And welcome to the site!

-Steve

rusty is correct, more details are needed.some simple stuff to check is:
1)timming,too retarded will overheat.
2)make sure serp belt convertion dosnt run water pump backwards.
3)what type of thermostat are you running?

Ok, to address these questions. Stock thermo. Timing is correct, it's a little sketchy because the carb is honestly a little too big for the car so i had to mess with some stuff. The car only overheats while sitting still. But doesn't overheat with the hood up unless its over 95 degrees outside. Not sure of fan CFM, did a little digging and i saw that my lack of shroud is a pretty big problem.

overheat while sitting and hood closed is an airflow problem.take a pick of your set up and post it,like someone said earlyer, that will answer some simple questions.

My guess is you have some crappy fans. 3 crappy fans won't cool as good as one good one. Flex A Lite has a line of really nice ones called Black Magic. They ain't cheap but they move some air. A shroud won't hurt either, but if the fans are junk, a shroud won't band aid um.

I'll get pics up tomorrow when I'm home. But they are nice fans. I didn't go cheap on anything. That's y I'm perplexed.

Please provide more info on your radiator.
Size, material, number of cores, thickness of the cores, manufacture
Are you running a hi-flow t-stat and water pump?

What manufacture and size radiator do you have?
How hot? give us a temp F to go by.
Are you running the stock T-stat and water pump?

Shroud. Thermal fan. 26" radiator. 180 Superstat. Green coolant. Laser temp gun. Don't change hoods. Get accurate readings of actual temps.

Finally got a chance to get some pics.

lmao..... every time i see that i have to laugh...DUDE....LOSE THE FANS...all they do is block air....you got both sides of the rad completely blocked and youre wondering why its overheating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

put a stock fan or a flex fan on it and your probs are over....dont re-invent the wheel...its been done already!

I WANT YOU TO DO AN EXPERIMENT.....

get a house box fan
plug it in....TURN IT ON
hold it up to your face in the middle of the room with the air blowing on your face...can ya feel the air moving?...

NOW...............
walk over to a blank wall with the air STILL blowing on your face and put it up against the wall....HOW MUCH AIR DO YOU FEEL NOW

thats what youre doing with all those RIDICULOUS FANS UP AGAINST THE RADIATOR.....GET RID OF THE FANS

I had only the two fans on there originally. On the motor side. Added the third later to help the problem, and it actually did help a little. Stock fan wont fit with with the rad. I had the overheating problems with the stock set up which is what initiated this long struggle for cooler temperatures. No wheel being reinvented. Just a frustrating problem.

I'm on the fence with this "remove electric fans" opinion... I've read it in several posts now,,,, but I don't know if I buy it.... The manufactures "today" place them on plenty of cars by design..... Also, the fan can spin if the air flow pushing through the fan is greater than what the fan is producing on its own... Also keep in mind that the fan isn't blocking anything if the car isn't moving "sitting in traffic" it is only providing air flow that wouldn't normally be there.....
My 2 cents

Thank you sir. That's what I'm saying. I've looked at this form every angle. Was hoping someone here would say "Oh, man, I had that same problem. Do this, that, and the other and you can fix it. Not be laughed at by a fellow mopar head when trying to resolve a problem.

nobody is laughing at you. i have had your problem and i am doing nothing but trying to help you. if i did not want to help you....i wouldnt have posted anything...but i have been in your shoes and the fans are the problem. if you dont want my help ,,,say so and i will bow out gracefully and let you spent a ton of money attempting to fix it and let you punch holes on your hood.

good day sir!

Heads are cast. And to reiterate the problem was occurring with the stock cooling set up, so i switched to aluminum rad and two slim fans. With two fans the car overheated after sitting at a red light for 3-4 minutes. With the third fan added this time has been greatly increased. Removing all the fans doesn't seem like a good idea. But i shouldn't need all of them on there, i do know that.
