California DMV taking orders for" NEW 1950s-1970s licence Plates"

thanks, that's cool, I'm sure there's a extra charge too, but I would love to get some "Black yellow" plates for my 68 RR...

Wow that is cool news, I need a front for my 69 RR only have the one rear black / yellow plate would be nice to get the other one. Thanks for the heads up never heard about that.:headbang:

Won't help you, you can only get normal sequential or personalized plates. They're not "exact" since they are reflectorized. This program is just an addition of color designs to the exisitng personalized plate program.

I know that this is just a way for the state to get a few more bucks from the driving public, but at least they recognize that there are collectors and car hobbyists out there. A small bit of recognition from a state that hasn't been too friendly to rodders/collectors in the past

You wont be Abel to to get a duplicate plate from DMV, but there are DMV approved companies that can restore your old plates and also make you a new front plate !

I like it. DMV has had the YOM (year of manufacture) program here in California for a while now. If you can locate a "clean" set of used plates they can be registered to your 69 back car. That's how I got YGJ-516 on the 69 Coronet in black. Took eight trips though.

i am glad to hear there is some difference in the new plates compared to the old ones. up here we take having the original black plates for the car as a confirmation of the cars history and authenticity as a cali car which is desirable up here.
when i went down to p/u the coronet in l/a the black plates were on it and still current tags so i drove around down there for a week before trailering back. the car was made in l/a and lived in l/a till it came here. i tried contacting anahiem dodge, lic bracket, for info but the names changed and records long gone. after trying to sell me a new car a couple of times the sales manager talked to me and explained the situation. seemed like a nice guy.

In Maryland if you can find a set of tags with the year of your car you can register them to display as your tags for a fee of $25.00,you just keep your historic stickered tags in the trunkdart.jpg

we have that also up here after 25 yrs. once there on there on. put the sticker to them.

I like this idea as I am planning on ordering some for my 66 Ply Satellite. It is a Nevada car so it somewhat is a west coast ride. What I did find out today though is that the DMV of CA is taking applications for these plates but they won't deliver them until 2014. Got a couple of years to wait....

I run YOM black plates on my 63 Dodge, live in Lake Elsinore (So Cal) put the month and year stickers on them and have never had a problem....I also have a 49 Ford that I bought 1 1949 plate for then found that you had to have 2 plates in good condition and send them into Ca DMV for approval then they send them back...so I ordered a personal plate with the same numbers that were on the 49 and put the tags on the 49. The registration shows the same number as the 49 (I know complicated and to wordy) but no hassle from local law enforcement or CHP to date......

DMV says you can not order personalized plates using any older format, how did you do this?

Oregon did throw back plates as well... good way to increase revenue a little bit. They cost about double the normal registration fees

Gee,

Kinda makes me sorry that I moved away from California......NOT!!!

Interesting.
Up here you can use "Vintage/Original" Plates~White with Green lettering, But only for Short Trips, Shows and Parades.

2 net 002.jpgWe can register old tags here in tx. but theres a little aluminum tag you have to bolt on the corner of the rear tag with valid date.

Don't send them to DMV. You take them in to a local Office and they put them on a copier. Do your research. Plus you hae to surrender the current plate and get a temp sticker for the window. I got three extensions before they figured it out.

just went in and ordered the plates with the same

Interesting because they claim they won't allow that, unless they're only tuned into the ABC 123 formats? But then again we are talking about Calif DMV, they are quite confused to say the least.
